2023 Fishing Thread

Now that we're talking about modding/DIYing baits...

Does anybody know a good place to order the stuff to make spinnerbait? I want to make small (1/8 or smaller) spinners with a single gold blade and instead of a skirt use a zman diezel minnow. Basically make a strike king redfish magic bait but without having to put up with the beetle spin type clip.

In small water, I’ve caught more fish on beetle spins and rooster tails than I can shake a stick at.

If my paycheck depended on catching 5 bass over 15”, I might care about spinner baits.

For someone who shoots rage knockoffs because the improvement in performance has diminishing returns, it’s funny to see you wanna invent the perfect spinnerbait.

The beetle spin is perfect for the combo type fishing you’re doing. And if dedicated spinner is in line, a rooster tail in appropriate size will do the job.

If you must have Goldilocks, take the skirt off a small single blade spinner and put your soft plastic on it.

I don’t think fish or you would know the difference between this and similar size beetle spin, but it’s cheap and easy.

I agree with the beetlespin, but only in open/clear water, and around hard structure, like casting under docks for perch etc. Not for places where you're not dealing with SAV, because you get one strand of grass/weed on em and it's now a pointless cast. If I'm fishing in the weeds, ned rigs and plastics and weedless frogs and such are the go to depending on what part of the water column I'm targeting. Seems that the ponds and rivers around me are getting more and more vegetation each year, likely due to runoff

Lureparts online

They have 1/8 oz head/wire ready to add a blade and skirt/trailer. Multiple options, here's one for reference:

I'm glad you're amused.

There's no difference between a knockoff rage and a real one in my experience after shooting a couple of dozen deer with each. There is a difference in how often a real spinner bait vs a beetle-spin type lure gets
hung on structure or needs to be untangled from itself. I've come to that conclusion after lots of hours pitching both. They're also easier to unhang from an underwater limb. Just generally less hassle.

I have actually put a diesel minnow on that exact Strike King lure. It works in that it hangs up less and is generally less maintenance, but I find that the spoon doesn't work as well. The redfish magic spoon will flash with a very, very slow retrieve and while it may be in my head I think I get more hits on gold spoons than silver in our chocolate milk water. Just what I think I'm seeing after a couple of summers of throwing them.

Since you're already shaking your head, I'll double down. I'm doing all this to create the perfect choupique lure. I wanna fish the local grinnel rodeo with my old man this father's day and that diesel minnow/ gold spoon combo is the best artificial I've found for them so far. You can fish it really slow in really shallow, stagnant, warm, low-oxygen water where they hang out in the summer. And that elaztech plastic holds up really well to those hellhound teeth.

Pretty good day of fishing. Caught about 10 or so bass and 2 bluegill on the bank with a weight less worm and a fluke. Hopped in the kayak this afternoon after dropping those others off to the neighbor. Ended up with 3 or 4 more bass and 15-20 hand sized bluegill on a little 4 ft ultra lite. Got all those on ice for me and will clean them up tomorrow after hopefully putting a turkey down for the opener.

We've had some goofy weather late this winter. I'm really only catching pike. Caught a 32" yesterday. I was a little bummed I didn't get into any river walleye prior to the season closing in PA. Hopefully I can figure them out in early May when they're back in. I am heading to see one of my boating/jet ski friends in South Carolina in a couple weeks, taking my crappie gear with me.

What's wrong with you lol
After a 25+ year hiatus from attempting to eat trout, I tried some fresh caught from one of our local rivers a couple weeks back. Gag a freakin maggot nasty just like every other time or way I have tried it. Makes fine coon bait though. Nail a metal stringer to a tree, hang your trouts on there with a little jingle bell or empty rink can. In town you may draw as many cats as you do coons but they are fine practice too. If you get a banded one, dont call in about it. Dont work the same way duck bands do.

Use this recipe and you won't ever complain again. Either that or Arkansas is doing something weird with their fish
