2023 Fishing Thread

Weekend recap, only made it out for a little bit at dark Saturday. Caught one smallmouth. Going out one afternoon this week on my favorite panfish lake.

We’ve had thunderstorms all week and I’ve been working. I took all this week off because my birthday is Friday. Hopefully I’ll get out to the lake for a little while. It’s been three weeks and I’m having withdrawals!

Got on a river Saturday after the MI saddle hunter meetup. Brought my tenkara and my 5 weight fly rod, and ended up using my tenkara cause it's easier to set up and get going right away. I caught 2 teeny fish, would have fit right in with whoever here is doing the micro fishing! A couple of fish ate at the surface, and a monster was just a few feet from me for a moment but wouldn't take anything I threw it's way.

Def should have used the fly rod, the water was just too big for the tenkara and I had to wade halfway across the river to even get within tenkara casting range, when I could have hit those spots with my fly rod no problem. Lesson learned, but it was fun to get out there on the water again.

@Nutterbuster it's a really cool feeling to catch fish using a fly you tied, welcome to the fly tying world!

Here are some of my favorites I tied. I love using scuds and zebra midges more than any other fly.

A parachute Adams dry fly with a caddis dropper is deadly on panfish. Adjust to local flavor of course. The dry fly acts like a strike indicator for the nymph. Double your chances on every cast.
No joke here. I've used a yarn indicator before and had fish hitting that more than the nymph. Switched to the dry dropper setup and now you're ready for surface or subsurface feeding
