2023 Turkey Hunting Thread

Here are a few of my latest test pattens with my Franchi Affinity 3 20 ga. I will be hunting the .575. Friends don’t let friends hunt without TSS and a 12 ga is totally obsolete now!

Beautiful.

My first bird this year was with a Carlson .555. I’m moving to a Remington Super Full Hevi-Shot .570 (or .572 depending on where you look). I shoot the Federal #9.

If you look at the patterns above you can see what I mean when I say TSS doesn’t like to be constricted too much. The more open chokes have fewer pellets in the circle, but they have a tighter concentration. The .555 is nasty in the circle, but the pattern is more spread out outside of the circle. I think it’s from the rebound effect of the tighter constriction.

.555 is getting very close the being blown out.

I understand evening hunts but I've killed a bunch of birds really close to that noon cut off time. Makes it rough especially for a traveling hunter that has a finite amount of time to kill one.

I have 2 that i remember well that we were watching the clock as he came in, killed one at 11:50 and the other at 11:55.

When I make them I take a dremel and thin the bones from the inside. Seems to change pitch to a get that 2 tone note. I love making them. View attachment 83552View attachment 83553View attachment 83554I’m no artist but made this one last year for a good friend. I usually clean and cook the bones then hang on to them till someone takes an interest in mine then I’ll make them one. I find that thinning bones and playing with overall length drastically chances tone. I work then till I get the sound I’m after.
Nice work!!!

Stoeger m3000. It’s a .650 but their tss choke for the federal is a .640. Just seemed to tight but maybe it’s design is to pull the wad from the shot. Don’t know
As I understand it with the flight control wad, you have to have a tight enough constriction to "defeat" the wad. The 20 gauge doesn't seem to be as critical as the 12 gauge loads. Maybe a thinner wad in the 20 gauge loads. I know before TSS a lot of folks were fighting the wad getting the heavyweight 15 g/cc3 shot to pattern right.

Makes sense.

There was a “wad stripper” choke that back in the day after hevi-shot got popular amongst the duck hunters. It had a few very minor dimples inside the choke that would restrict the wad enough at exit to slow it down, separating it from the shot.

I just came within a cats a** of buying me a little Mossberg 500 410 in MO Greenleaf. Showed restraint guys I’m proud of me. Now I’m going home to get cash so the wife dont see it on the bank statement. lol
Not sure about restraint but definitely practical wisdom disguised as self preservation. I see you playa. ;)

Patternmaster claims that right? I don't even remember now.

Those tactical turkey 28 gauge guns are speaking to my soul, but practicality has me pondering the stevens 301T 20 gauge to match my 410 301T

So for those who have the Carlson’s 20gauge TSS choke which of the shot sizes do you recommend? I saw that the Carlson’s TSS tube was designed specifically for the Federal TSS loads…. Are you confident this will pattern well? I also saw DIY Hunter teary were using BurgessCreek TSS loads in both 12 and 20 gauge has anyone tried this? It’s very difficult to justify $60 a box for me being a an old geezer used to $4.00 for a box of 10 shells.

Son of a b**** I caved. lol. I love this little umpalumpa. View attachment 83598View attachment 83599Came with the Holosun 407k x2 to boot. Couldn’t resist. This is the site for impulse buying so I’m not going to get shamed here. Nice to have a place to share.
They look slick. I'm a sucker for OG Greanleaf

If I bought one, it will be this summer/fall in greanleaf. Apparently an indian creek or jebbs .520 and 1 1/2 oz #9.5 throws a hammer pattern. A lot of people's patterns show the .525 throws better pattern with #9
