2023 Turkey Hunting Thread

Put in 6.5 miles and 35 flights and not a single gobble. Did find a ton of turkey scratching so I know they’re on that ridge at some point, some big bear scat, and a few spots to hit this fall for deer. Had some really nice views as well. All in all a solid morning.

6.5 miles in the mountains, that’s an awesome way to spend a day

I would setup in a different spot and change calls too.
Well they've not roosted there ever in the 4 yrs Ive been hunting this farm. Ive moved my setup spot. Got out other day after a short work day & I called for a couple hours before went for a walk. Looks like I gotta weeks vacation from turkey hunting cuz theres water 400-500 yrds in all directions. Been a wet spring here in Michigan. Ill regroup n be back out next weekend.

Never tried this but figured with the great season had. I wanted to try and do something special. So I attempted making wingbone calls for me and the young man I hunt with. I guess not too bad. These are for him to have. Now if they work and call turkey is a big guess. Will try next year if nothing else cool item to have I guess to remember the hunt.IMG_0480.jpegIMG_0482.jpeg

Nice work!

Was out all morning today. A lot of gobbling but all on other properties. Found this on some public I was on today!! There had to be over 15 piles all around a giant slippery elm with large horizontal branches. Near a point of a ridge where an old logging road comes up from the ravine. About 1300ft of elevation difference. Bear loafing area or bedding for sure!!

Honestly have killed more birds mid day/evenings than mornings. Just Thursday killed two around 2:15pm.
Is that late mid may or late in the may? Haha I think u thought I said day. I’m allllll about all day turkey hunting! More wondering what states that are still in like New York being from Ohio what’s the hunting is like. Not sure I can handle turkey season being over

Oh crap my bad…lol. I completely FUBARED that up.

Anyone turkey hunt mid-may to late may?
I hunt both. Past two years in Michigan I've been able to pattern the Toms. I got to my spot a couple hours early and didn't use decoys. One bird I gave the calling everything I had and two Toms quietly walked to their strut zone. The other bird I just sat and waited until they showed up.

PA is open all May. 1st half hunt till noon, second half hunt all day
R they hammering still the later weeks in may? I can’t hunt next weekend like I’d like and I thought about coming the 20thish to check things out.

Thanks! I might have to work my way up that way!

You can hunt all day, including Sundays here in Michigan. I had a week in April and a week in June. I did see some last June but that was because a buddy knew where they roost and they showed up

New to me Turkey Gun blessing. So I was recently, ( and out of the blue) gifted this used NEF 12ga. 3.5” Turkey gun. The barrel was sawed to 21” and re-tapped for a choke. It has a little minor wear in some spots but basically in VG to Exc. condition. I decided to give it a bit of an upgrade. It throws a decent patterns at 25yards with lead too. The best is how light and easy it is to carry around all day. IMG_2771.jpeg

Took my daughters boyfriend out this morning. His first hunt for any animal. Perfect set up, nice bird comes in at 6:15, 25 yards and he misses. I spent the next 15 minutes working a couple other birds that were still hanging around. Get another Tom to come down to us and he squeezed the trigger and all I hear is click. So I grab the 20 gauge I brought and shot it as he was trying to run away. I felt bad but he had 2 opportunities lol

So we then went to the other side of the farm and set up over there. Zero action so at 9am we walked back to where we originally were. Within 20 minutes I was able to get another bird down to us. He was full strut for the last 50 yards. It was awesome. He dropped him and we had a double! Safe to say he is hooked
