2024 Gear thread

This is a no win situation for a vendor. I have no idea what product testing they did prior to release but, if you come out with a product and your consumers give you several ideas on how to make it better you have two choices.

Make the changes and have people slam you for letting consumers do your testing or, don't make the changes and have people slam you for not listening to your consumers.

Now, if the changes are safety related shame on them but, if the changes are to make it more functional based on customer feedback good for them.

They sort of seem to be figuring this one out as they go a bit.

They should probably offer a free or at least discounted rope upgrade to the few who bought them originally. looks like that’s the only change.

The original rope system didn’t really seem very functional. I do wonder how the hitches will do on the new coated rope.

Why even have it a cam over platform at height? Seems like a step backwards from the LW handclimber top.

So it doesn’t slip or fall from the tree if you get your weight towards the front of the platform or to the sides.

I have a post on my climbing platform and wouldn’t have it any other way.

But sure, many say they like no post like the LWHC for walking the tree.

So u gotta step over those cables to move around? Nope

In theory it’s a big enough platform to maneuver on without working around the tree. In practice, I think the weight reducing X design works against the advantage of it’s otherwise large footprint.

At 17.5“ x 15” it is bigger and deeper than any standard platform.

Was some Asian style shin spikers(aka 4 pronged tree spikes) that you could just climb up a tree with, no harness or tether necessary, lol.

I loved the standard 2200 configuration for early season. Mid thru late-season it fell apart for me organizationally... Primarily the space for layers was lacking, the lid doesn't have enough space to offset for bulky items, and I don't like strapping clothing to the outside. I would love to see a 3000-3600 redesigned similar to the 2200 configuration, they all compress down small anyway, and I dislike changing my bag mid-season, so I'm probably just using the current 3600 going forward...

I follow that. It would be along the lines of Kuiu Pro 3600, which is a pretty good general purpose bag and big enough to load bibs and a coat inside.

I’m not necessarily deadset on packing my outerwear in the bag, if everything else is perfect. I stuff my bibs, coat, and platform in the Stryker XL shelf and it’s fine. But the narrowness of the K4 2200 and the internally pleated pocket design makes it seem functionally smaller than it already is and I hate that it doesn’t have attachment points so you don’t have to always compress the bag. It’s only 7” x 10.5” for crying out loud.

Probably we should start a K4 thread. Ok, I just did.

I agree that's why I didn't buy one. But if you did....

I didn't see him mention what the changes were in the video I watched. If the rope is the main change I agree a discounted rope upgrade would be a good compromise. I do like the idea of a slightly stiff/coated rope much more than a metal or stiff rubber band. I also reserve the right to change that opinion if I ever try one.

The new "coated rope" looks to be the Dyneema with heat shrink tubing over it. Like their "guide arms".

The other new stand change is it apparently uses no pins.

Camming the platform or not, with this design, it may need a second lower strap to be secure enough for side loading as a saddle platform IMO.

Don't like the whole velcro boot strap thing. Which, if you were to drop the strap at height you're screwed.

I like the concept they're after, but it has a ways more to go to sell me on it. Have suggestions for changes to the original, but thats their job. I'll withold to wait and see what they come out with for V2.

I do see a review where the Amsteel is already reinforced so maybe it’s just the pins they are changing? idk. When I looked at it originally, the arms were just Amsteel.

For my climbing platform I use stabilizer straps attached to my saddle until my post is secured with a cam strap. Reattach them before undoing the cam strap to climb down.

Just listen to those pins jingling. Ehhh. Needs a lot more than just eliminating the pins. Also don't like the platform voids at what would be foot placement if standing.

Betting LWCG runs with this idea to likely put out the form factor of what it should be....

I'd really like to see a company release a platform at 3lbs that was designed/machined to carry sub 1lb sticks the way the LWCG stands do. Seems much of the platform offerings are just regurgitated ideas.

I'm doing my best to maintain my distance on the K4 as my K3 is still just fine for me lol

Sounds like you just described the Fix

Summit is coming out with a new climber apparently. Just got the email. I'm mildly optimistic that's it's a small saddle climber but I highly doubt it. Any of you insiders know? Assuming it will be at ATA? Said in two days.......

That’s what I came here to post. I used my saddle/one stick all bow season. Then once gun season arrived I transitioned to a new to me summit viper SD. It sure was comfortable, quiet, and fast climbing. I was thinking about trying to find a used summit open shot to mod like a LWHC. I’m anxious to see their new climber.

XOP should be announcing more details on their new hand climber at ATA as well. Atleast on Facebook they are saying 2024 release.
