30-06 or 243 or 270

I keep all my shots 50 yards or less mainly due to thick briars. The 30.06 always flips them. Keeps me from being cut up. Plus it was my old mans pig mauser.

I will add for the love of God and all things Holy please go buy some rings some where other than Walmart $12.99 specials. I always hear about guys checking zero the night before opener. I shoot my guns more than most typical hunters so I don’t have to check zero but mine never moves by never I mean never! I haven’t adjusted a scope in years! The only time would be a bullet type / weight change.

X2!!!

@donnieballgame the 243 will serve you well. Just stick with a bonded bullet and it will be fine. The 25-06 is about the same as a 243 just adds a little distance and a lot of blast. There really is no replacement for shot placement.
Thanks, I'll look into the bonded bullet, think I'll try and get to a range this week!

If your thinking about a Marlin 30/30 be sure to consider the 35 Rem. Its a harder hitting round than the 30/30 and one of the best brush calibers for whitetail available IMO. I've killed many whitetail with mine and 90% of them have never moved from the point they were standing when shot.

Not really looking for a gun to hunt with. Just to have but will probably take it a few times. I just like the history of the 30/30 and would like to have one.

I ended up buying a 94AE in 1999. My brothers and Dad all bought Winchester model 70’s with Redfield Scopes. The original red field scopes are worth about $1000.00.

I was told that my 94 was priced about $1400.00 today. I only probably have 300 rounds through it including 50 today. Blew me away. I bought it for ~$350.00. It was all I could afford at the time.

I have killed a handful of deer with it. I always wanted to put a scope on it. So I went over to the local sporting goods store and got what I needed and tricked it out. Once I gotta it zeroed. I tore up the target. Lol. I should have been hunting.

I bought a 3006 and it’s all I have ever used. It has some bad heat stringing but the first shot is dead accurate and it’s all I’ve ever needed. From 12 to 386yds it has dropped them all with one shot. I bought this gun knowing I would take it out west though.

If I were in your position expecting only close shots I would probably go with a brush gun. Something shorter and probably leaver action.

All this gun talk got me itching for a scope on my 30-30. I went and got the weaver mounts and rings and a 2x7 Leupold, I bore sighted it. Spent an hour on the range and Got her dialed in at 100 yds for my daughter and 12 year old. At least that is what I told my wife.

Makes a perfect a perfect saddle gun. Much easier to maneuver than a long action rifle in the woods. However the 06 will get the nod in a few cut overs I will hunt

Leuopold scout scope on my marlin .30-30 is a great combo!

I’m a 30-06 guy for many of the reasons stated previously and versatility of that round I will never see myself selling that gun.

However, There is one caliber that I have yet to see mentioned and that’s the .44 magnum. Ruger made this carbine up until 1985 so they can be a little hard to find but this gun is the ultimate saddle gun if you don’t have shots past 100yards. It’s like a 10/22 with a lot more thump.

I have all listed. I also have a 6.5 creedmoor.

I’d look at the creedmoor

That’s what I’m currently using if I’m not bow hunting. I’m curious how the bullet will perform on a shoulder shot and what kind of bloodtrails. Only taken head and neck shots. Using the hornady eld-x bullets. Shot 3 shots at 300 last weekend on sand bags for the 1st time in my life. Never had anywhere to shoot that far before. I was happy.

I had one of those in excellent condition that I foolishly let somebody convince me it wasn't a very useful gun for hunting in this area when I first moved here. I've asked the guy I sold it to if he'd sell it back to me but I doubt he will and he's never shot it. Oh well. If I need one bad enough I can suck it up and pay the ridiculous prices a decent one goes for these days :D

That's a very respectable group!

If you are looking to have a single rifle the 30-06 is the best of the three cartridges listed. This based on simple availability of ammunition and general physics. The .308 caliber cartridge with a 1:10 twist barrel will allow you to fire a greater range of bullet weights. The heavier bullets have superior sectional density and ballistic Coefficient to the other caliber possibilities. This gives greater penetration, down range energy and most importantly wind deflection. Range is a known constant but wind is assumed/ averaged over distance to target. That’s the physics part that gets overly complicated for general discussion. The recoil is as simple as mass forward vs platform mass. The 270 and 30-06 share the same powder capacity. Firing either cartridge with 150gr projectiles from identical rifles will produce the exact same recoil. The 243 was left out of that comparison for obvious reasons. To put recoil in perspective the numbers I have read list the average 30-06 with a 180gr projectile produce 19 lbs felt recoil. This is the exact same recoil as the average 12ga with a 1 1/4 oz load like a Winchester Super X. Anyway there is a reason the 30-06 has been in use all over the world for 100yrs and a decade. If it weren’t for Jack O’Connors outdoor articles the 270 may not even be in production now.

I had to read that twice. Now I see the 300! Lol. Respectable for that distance for sure, especially since your first time.

I was thinking 100 yds, I would throw that gun in the garbage! Lol

Keep it up those groups will shrink!

Very nice group, especially on your first ever attempt. That group would be 1/2 MOA at 300yds.

I had a 700 in 7mm rem mag that seriously grouped that way at 100 yards. On a good day at least. Tried multiple different factory loads, changed scope and mounts, let other guys shoot it...just a turd.

Sold it and put the money on a CZ 452.

Best trade deal in the history of trade deals. :D

Funny when i saw the thread title, I own three rifles in these exact calibers . The .243 was my first rifle, the .270 is the rifle my grandfather bought coming home from korea, a first version savage and the 06 is a new gun I bought myself with a stock option buy out.

The .243 has killed a ton of deer and todays higher end ammo like Hornady Superformance is BRUTAL knock down power. I shot a doe on a frontal out of the evolution and it wrecked her. That 06 even with a standard bullet if it hits bone of any kind will create stupid size holes, nice part about that gun is its stainless. The .270 is a great middle ground. My 06 was bought for the final do all rifle for my life. Im not a gun collector.

don't forget guys he's talking about shots less than 50 yards. it don't take much gun for this. I wouldn't want a screaming fast flat shooting small diameter bullet for this.
I had a 243, 243 wssm, 6mm at close distances the would enter and exit the deer the same size. not my favorite rounds for this. 3006 is a badarse round i love it but why take the shoulder punishment. For my 270 and 3006 it would take a ke reader to tell the difference from 50 to 500 yds.
there are so many better choices for close encounter like this, rifles that wouldn't kick but the animal wouldn't run far either, if it ran at all.
I could take a different caliber rifle hunting everyday for a week, but i pick up the 308 more times than not. From 0 to 500 i wouldn't think twice in the right conditions

I check zero on my 30-06 every year. But anytime I've gotten an opportunity to hunt with a rifle since I purchased it five years ago, my .444 crack barrel with peep sight gets the nod. It's tiny, and I don't get many opportunities past 50-100yards. I can make the shot every time at that distance, and It makes quick work of shoulders for sure.

The fellow who introduced me to hunting had a lever action .35 remington - I think that will be my next one. It seemed to be a very nice mix of utility and reach given my hunting style.

They touch at 100. I wish I had 300 or better yet 600 yards to shoot at my house. Anyone need some timber! Lol
I love shooting and will soon get into precision reloading.
