3D printed steps

I printed a couple in ABS and I knew abs layer adhesion is not the best but gave it a try anyway. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. While it is plenty strong to hold me even when sheered in half, the bad layer adhesion (and this is the nature of the beast with abs) caused the steps to fail when receiving side pressure. Now you can make these stronger with a high infill think 80% or more but really PETG takes ZERO modifications to be able to print. And abs needs mods on most printers. So be safe and just buy PETG!

I downloaded them from your Thingiverse page.

Some thoughts I shared on the Facebook post:

They were printed a printer modified as an ABS only machine. Though I did skip any measures to strengthen the steps (such as infill over 60% or annealing) I wanted to get a not ideal representation of the material. While I feel the vertical strength was frankly amazing with I put excessive side pressure on them the “teeth” created high pressure points that were contrary to the center brace of the steps cause if a slowly worsening delamination.

No problem. Happy to lend some insight. ABS as a material is more rigid than PETG but this means less forgiving. I think having two side braces inset was of one center one would eliminate this issue, but testing is needed. ABS is also somewhat difficult to get better than okay layer adhesion. And with PETG being so easy to print with real active to ABS (that needs mods and an enclosure) seems wise to just use PETG.

Just a note, ABS is really temp sensitive when printing if you have any type of air temp changes it will cause problems you need a heated bed and a sealed chamber to get good prints. Even so it has other issues like thick walls will cause it to curls up something fierce. Everything has it's pluses and minuses. If you do have abs and your machine isn't sealed up I've used a box over the whole printer to keep air temps the same. you do need to find the sweet spot for your machine to print at.

Yes PETG is super forgiving pretty strong and resilient to sun and chemicals. ABS not so much, weathers to easy, a variety of chemicals will eat it readily.

New designs for tree steps & ROS, Made up a couple of these in different materials they are rock solid (if you get your printing right) PETG has been recommended as a GO to material by several people for these. These were printed in ABS and I have also tried PC with good results had to tweak them to get layers to bond well (more heat, less fan, slower speeds...This is all machine dependent so thats up to you to figure out). Being I'm not a light guy I could literally jump up and down on these and had no problem. That being said, if you choose to try these safety safety safety don't attempt anything without a climbing harness and proper gear.

Thanks, Really appreciate you and Wayne bringing this back into my scope of ideas. I had given up on tree steps.
I think all of the designs you have done including the one you tweeked for me are good, like you say safety first but if you have your printer dialed in for good layers then these work, I printed half of one and tried to smash it and I had a real hard time of breaking it, looking forward to trying the arched model and liking that the central support has gone no more support which will help reduce times, great work, regards wayne

Broke while practicing in my back yard. Used as a ring of steps put side pressure on it to move around the tree snapped that thin wing. Sounded like a .22 going off. Slipped off a scraped the hell out of my shin. Contacted the company...Mark was super nice gave me a full refund. Great company and service but they need to fix that wing.
Did you buy these from mark new or used? Do you think he would refund me if my broke if they are used?
