Probably plenty of opinions on this but I don’t think it’s a bad list by any means.

I pretty much agree with the exception of the 6.5 creedmore and .300 Weatherby Mag. I don’t know what all the fanfare is about with those two chamberings and I own neither, but my personal choices would be the .308 Win and the .338 in their stead. Perhaps the .35 Remington instead of the .338. I know, not romantic at all and all yawners but tried and true. I am interested in that .360 Buckhammer though!!

Agree on 12 gauge and 22 LR.

Substitute 30-06 for the 300 magnum. (the old 06 will do 99% of what a 300 will do you just lose about 100 yards at the far end of the spectrum where very little game is shot anyway.) 30-06 has factory loads from 55 grains to 220 grains...pretty versatile and just about anyone can handle the recoil. You can find ammo in any store from Anchorage to Cape Town.

If larger game is planned, then I add the 375 H&H Magnum. It will throw a 270 grain bullet as flat as a 30-06 with a 180 grainer but it punches way above its weight. You can find ammo anywhere on Earth big game is hunted from Anchorage to Cape Town. The 300 grain load will handle really big animals better. It has been laying out game from Dyker to Elephant since 1911. It works fine on whitetail deer...I know. It is about as close to the perfect all around cartridge as there is.

Also on the BIG game side I vote 458 Lott. It will easily push a 500 grain bullet to 2150 fps. That has been the standard of all the old British nitro express rounds and they were proven Stoppers on all the really big animals like elephant, buffalo, hippo. 458 Lott is becoming a standard of sorts. A friend of mine went on a hunt to Zimbabwe about 8 years ago. His rifle made it to Zim with him, but that airline sent his luggage including his ammo to Mexico. It was not hard for the PH to come up with some Lott ammo in camp when he got there.

I agree with the 30-06 over the 300Mag. Or with a .270 which is my all time favorite, so that's a personal opinion. Also agree with the .35Rem personally, but 90% of other people that has lever actions would say 30-30.

.308 too, I like the Creedmoor being on the list but the .308 been dependable for much longer. Again I would personally pick the Creedmoor but sometimes going with what is widely available is what sensible.

I would also vote for the 30-06 or .308 instead. Or maybe a 270 if your shoulder is too wimpy to handle the '06. LOL

And a Marlin lever action in 45-70! My all time favourite gun is the 1895 SBL.

45-70 is a great round. If you handload you can load mild to wild with it. For that matter, the 458 Lott can easily be loaded down to mirror all the 45-70 loads using the same projectiles. You could even load 458 Lott with black powder and cast bullets and have a 45-110 of sorts.

I read 300 Win Mag. I think there's a pretty good difference between the 300 Win and the 300 Weatherby. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There is. Despite being a big Weatherby rifle fan, I'm not a fan of most of their cartridges. Waste of powder, expensive to shoot, excessive meat destruction.

My 5:
  1. Remington 870 12 gauge (or comparable)
  2. Ruger 10/22 (or comparable)
  3. .50 cal modern, in-line muzzleloader
  4. .30-06 bolt action (I'm partial to my Weatherby Vanguard) (covers 95% of same territory as 6.5CM and .300WM they suggested, and allows me to have the all-important #5 below...)
  5. Glock 19 for EDC
Kinda wild to me that they wouldn't include a pistol for EDC as a must-own firearm, but hey, I'm sure their fancy 6.5CM is sweet to shoot at 600 yards... :dizzy:

List was for hunting guns. Not just 5 guns to have. Else I would of said a AR-15 in 9mm.

You’re absolutely correct my bad. I meant the Win Mag!

This is lagit...the 30 30 lever action with open sights is over looked as a great rainy day brush gun and road hunter for shorter shots and aquiring a moving target.should keep one in the truck at all times for quick audibles
