8mm Predator rappel rope

I haven't climbed or rappelled on my 8mm predator yet, BUT playing with it in the garage I like it a lot too.
Something else to think about for storage. How many of us actually climb to where the tag end of our rope is not touching the ground? I know I usually don't. I almost always cut my ropes down to 30ft and am happy with that. Think about how many wraps I lose in a storage pouch. Just because everyone else is running 40ft doesn't mean you have to.
Side note, I usually make myself a new lineman's rope out of the excess 10ft.

I like this idea as well. I'm too scared of heights to climb to 40ft anyways lol.

I think the standard size pouch would suit it well if you want to pack small, and there's still a little room in there for carabiners and the outside pouch would be perfect for a figure 8 device. If you want more room, the large would definitely fit it with plenty of room to spare.

I'm actually now considering getting a second standard size pouch specifically to keep this predator setup in, and leave my 9mm canyon elite and madrock in the other large pouch. But, I'd like to devise a way to make these a "quick detach" of some sort from the saddle, to just swap them and go based on how I'm hunting that day. I made one attempt, but it ended up adding too much length to the straps and the pouch hung down too far and flopped around.

I'm sure there's some sort of MOLLE attachment that would facilitate this, but I don't know enough about MOLLE to know all the different attachment styles.

Just out of curiosity, what’s the thought process on when to use the two different ropes?

I have thought about that in the past as well. But now I’m actually thinking of being able to leap frog my hitches past branches with a single rope rather than carrying an extra tether

Nothing more than preference and an idea that I haven't tested yet, and I like options.

I will likely relegate the 8mm rappel rope to 2TC. It's lighter, packs down smaller, easy to manage, etc.

I will then use my canyon elite when one-sticking or multi-sticking with a platform, for the sole purpose that I like to use a madrock. If I have a stick kick out, I can grab the handle and let myself down. The madrock won't work with the 8mm.

I just like having the option to hunt different ways, and the gear is different. For instance, last year one of my spots was less than 150 yards in, and I took my climber. Then on another hunt, I one sticked for a couple of days, then found another spot that didn't have any great tree options but there was an amazing spot for a brushed-in tree seat, so I used my tree seat on the ground.

If there's a madrock-like device that comes out that will work with 8mm, I may never use the canyon elite again, but who knows.

I was reading on a different thread about a new device coming out to potentially use on smaller diameter ropes.

Yeah I think that was probably my thread lol. There was a teaser comment from Hangfree on their Instagram post when they released the 8mm predator, but so far mums the word.

I'll try to remember and look at my pouches, sounds like I'm considering doing something similar for my rappel kit, and hopefully my 2tc kit.

@bowhunthard88 , do you know of a MOLLE that might work for BT?
Check out (maybe?):

Those options would be perfect if I had the forethought to ask Jerry to put some horizontal molle on the back of the pouches. As they are now, I don't believe it would clip to the webbing on the pouch.

I think this might be a solution - replace the quick clip on what I've made here with a locking g hook -

Would slide the tri bar in the saddle molle from the top, then lock it into place, and the g hook would fold over allowing the loops on the side pouch to hook on.

Would still be a little droop and flop, but much less than the quick clip that adds about 2" to the whole thing.

Actually the shipping and service is good too.

You're a frickin GENIUS! These are perfect!

I cut my rappel rope at 33 ft. Made a noticeable difference from 40. Not much but 40 was more than I would ever need.
