There's been a lot of criticism of the rules and staff here recently and I thought I’d take few minutes and try to post a “View from the other side”. I freely admit things can go smoother here but I wanted to share a viewpoint of things from another point of view for your consideration.

As Mods here our primary job is to try to keep the site as peaceful and drama free as possible. Unfortunately sometimes that involves moving or locking threads, deleting posts and trying to redirect discussions back in line. None of us like doing any of these things and only do it when we feel we have to. At the core, all of us mods are just saddle hunting gear fanatics at heart who’ve enjoyed and appreciated the content on this forum for years. Because of that we’ve agreed to volunteer our time to try help @redsquirrel out as a way of giving back to this site and the community that has helped us out so much. I’m sure I speak for all of these guys when I say I come here primarily for the camaraderie with fellow saddle hunters, not to have to police the behavior of fellow members and (dare I say) friends, even though I recognize that is part of the role I have accepted.

The rules established here are intended entirely to keep the forum a peaceful, enjoyable experience for the users. When I started here there were only a few basic rules, among them, No discussion of Religion or Politics. Why those particular subjects? Well it’s pretty obvious that these are potentially polarizing topics which can elicit emotional responses and conflict as well as having nothing to do with the intent of the forum base topic. The evolution of those basic rules to those we have now have occurred in direct response to the evolution of this site and things that have cropped up and created disturbances here.

When the site was formed there were no commercial options for saddle hunting and the focus of the site was simply a bunch of guys sharing ideas and debating the merits and possible issues associated with them. As time has passed and interest in saddle hunting has increased, more and more commercial options have been developed. I think we all agree that is good thing.

As saddle hunting has grown the forum is continually attempting to evolve its rules as well to best serve its members while still trying to best maintain the congenial nature of this forum. Are we perfect? Admittedly no, but unfortunately the world does not exist in a black/white, right/wrong environment. Most of the issues fall into the grey areas between intent of the rules and absolute compliance. None of us mods are professional mediators or psychologists. All we can do is try our best to interpret the grey area between rule intent and the black/white rule enforcement and attempt to do the best we can to head off confrontations before they start. We are not trying silence any vendors nor are we condoning any members taking unwarranted or unfair shots at any vendor.

In the way of explanation, the rule banning vendor interaction about their own products in the general discussion areas is intended to provide areas where the general membership can provide honest feedback about products without the fear of getting flamed by a vendor who perceives the feedback as unfair or as a potential threat to revenue. At the same time we would expect the membership feedback about products in these areas to be of the nature where they are not directly seeking vendor input or inflammatory enough in nature to try to goad a vendor into response. To be clear, we are not banning vendors from posting in the non-vendor areas. We recognize and value the opinions of these veteran saddle hunters to help members move in a positive direction in their saddle hunting journey. I believe all of us mods would thank these veteran saddle hunters for their help in our personal saddle hunting journey’s.

The vendor area was created as a place where members could go seek out vendors input on their products and get the first hand, inside knowledge only a product insider can provide. At this point it has been decided access to vendors in this area is a service that the forum is providing similar to the classifieds. Hence the membership requirement to post here. Remember, even if you choose not to register you can still follow any of the conversations here and maybe find the answers to your questions.

In my personal opinion, if you’re a saddle hunter vendor, $15 a year is a small price to pay to be able to interact directly with your customer base. If you’re a general member it’s a perk of membership to be able to seek direct input from a saddle vendor pro.

Is the system perfect? . . . No. Are we trying to fix things? . . .Yes. Please remember though that all of us (including Redsquirrel) have real jobs and real lives outside of this forum and any changes takes time. Every change has a risk of adversely affecting something else and we need to try to take those possible ramifications into consideration before just blindly pressing forward. We realize we will never be able to make everyone happy but we are trying our best to make the majority happy. Please bear with as we continue on with this difficult task.

Thanks for taking the time to read these lengthy ramblings of a mildly frustrated mod.

Big thanks to all the mods for herding the saddle hunting cats...even if we don't say it, thank you.

Yes, we can't all agree on which broadhead to use. I would hope we can all agree that declining hunter numbers is cause for concern. Saddlehunter.com is a great resource for new and seasoned hunters alike. I hope I live to see the end of bickering on the internet, however I know this is a fools thought. All too common to see comments like: "I can shoot better than that and I am only 13!" posted to a video of a hunter that may have made a marginal shot.

Well said! A big thanks to @redsquirrel and all the mods, who have taken so much of there personal time. This forum and saddle hunting has grown extremely fast over the past couple years. I hate to see the negativity and slander that pops up, and unfortunately it reminds me of of other forums, which they are trying to prevent. I urge everyone to give it time and the leadership on here will get it worked out. It's not something that happens in an instant. We have learned a lot from reading posts and sharing with others, bouncing ideas back and forth. That is how this aspect of hunting has grown so fast, thanks to all on here. And, if you are truly unhappy here, take a break, don't post, come back and see how things have changed.

I for one find this site one of THE most positively managed and moderated sites out there. Perceptions are reality; unfortunately, most people can and will make a connection between a person's internet style and statements made with their behavior in the woods. Right or wrong, fair or biased, we ALL, collectively have a responsibility to the future of our hunting heritage to treat others as we expect to be treated. We must continuously uphold the highest ethical standards of fair chase and safety in as warm and welcoming a manner as possible. And we must expect this of ourselves first and foremost. The person we see in the mirror every day is truly the only person whose attitude is the one we can change. Let's continue down this welcoming and inclusive path of knowledge and edification for the improvement of saddle hunting efficiency and safety, but in a more general and longer lasting sense, for the continuous improvement and efficiency of safe and ethical hunting harvest overall. Keep up the great work and thank you for the opportunity to learn so much about a great way to hunt!

OMG I thought you’d never shut up!
As the saddle market has grown this site has grown. Influx of different people will and has changed this site. You guys are doing the best with the hand you were dealt. I think you’re doing fine. Hell like 1000 guys come through here daily. If it was that bad there would only be 1. Lol.

See you in a tree, Ricky

Somebody PM'd earlier and inferred I must be related to @Nutterbuster. :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:

You guys have way more patience than I ever could with some. To me the simple solutions is pay $15 and you can post and reply anywhere you want! Heck I spend $15 a month for Netflix and I’m on here WAY more hours than I watch TV! Granted the classifieds have cost me just a tad more

Thanks to @redsquirrel and all the moderators. @boyne bowhunter the tethrd thread was operating outside the rules and the other was just begging to be locked. I get it. Most people would if they actually read the rules. E-commerce is where the buisiness is for saddle companies right now. For a company to see a complaint here or on Facebook or any other site and not attempts address it in some manner would be irresponsible. It would be nice if the op could post a follow up in the same thread whether the outcome was to their liking or not. Either way I hoped it worked out for all parties involved. The downside is y’all locked it just as me and @Vtbow were getting ready to throw down over which was better trebark or mossy oak bottomland.

Man that's tough. ..it's the two patterns I own!

When I started coming to this site in the fall of 2018 I was very much interested in the ideas, concepts, and DIY projects that I found. What I thought was really cool was the thoughtful, encouraging responses I saw in post after post. Complete strangers taking the time to explain a technique or even post pictures or video to help answer someone's question. Or offering constructive criticism on a poster's project to make sure they considered all the safety aspects of the gear. Or, here's a list of the things you will need and where you can get them, good luck. It was the most positive Internet forum I had been on.

Then fishing season started and I didn't visit the site again until last October. Different layout, different vibe. I had to scroll past the "Why hasn't my xxxx shipped yet?" posts to find the cool DIY and Hunting stuff. Ugh.

So I appreciate Red and the moderators working to maintain that friendly, cordial atmosphere. I know it's not easy with a rapidly changing industry and tons of new members. But from my perspective they are doing a good job of balancing free speech and trying to keep things fair to everyone involved.

I know from life experience that not everyone is going to be happy all the time. It's not ya'lls job to make that be so. It's really each participants responsibility to be, and to act like an adult. That being said, we're not going to do it perfectly either. Any group/community are going to have differences of opinion, and that's ok. There's a saying I like, It's, " Take what you like and leave the rest". Not everyone is going to like everything I have to say. But if there's something a person sees that has value to them, then take that. It's how we share information, it's how we respectfully offer our differing opinions, that makes this community different than the rest of that nonsense that's going on out there. We have Red, we have you mods, I'm happy and thankful of the job the administration of this sight are doing for us. There's no place like saddlehunter.com, none. I think if someone thinks they can do it better then they should go out and start their own sight. Walk that mile in Reds' shoes. Keep doing what your doing, because it's working, and for every 1 participant that's so unhappy there's 1,000 that love this place, the way it is. Growth means change, and change is hard. I for one am with you 100%. I love this sight, and I love the people it brings together. Thanks for the sharing. We shouldn't fear, nor should we turn our backs on the spirit that this sight was born on. Innovation, and respect among the members. We all have a responsibility to help foster that atmosphere here. If this sight fails in that respect it's not the the administrations fault it's ours. Just my opinion.
