I'm old enuff to always take advice from guys that know more than I do!! That was just a small trial piece, the next one was a little better. Will try the thin wire trick also. When you fish the fid up the center you have to bunch up the rope so your fid stays in the center and not going out and over strands. I've seen the thin wire trick and that looks way easier. As for fid size...I bought a 7/16 for 7/16 rope and it was way too small. I use an old aluminum arrow to splice 1/4" amsteel and it works great.

2117 XX75 is the perfect size arrow shaft for 1/4" Amsteel.Not trying to be ugly...but that bury looks rough.
