I like the idea of the WE Perch, but wanted something with a bit more foot space on the ends. After wearing out a WE step measuring and re-measuring, I came up with this. Made a jig and cut all the pieces for 3 of these ( have to make everything in 3's for family).

Comments, suggestions are welcome before I weld up.

Once agian, I realize why this is better left to the pros. Came out good enough, but had to do a lot of tweaks. I figured out that, for me, it's better to put the platform in before caming over the step. I can get it much tighter. When I cam over the step first, the outside pressure that standing on the platform creates causes the step to loose contact with the tree.
I do like the "rounder" edge though.

Hats off to the pros. I'm always sceptical of what seem to be high prices, until I realize the labor that goes in. Although the material is pretty cheap ($30 or so), cuts, welding, and especially finish, makes the commercial bought a fair deal. I have about 4 hours into each. So, after materials, that's about $150, or $37.50 an hour. After overhead, taxes, other costs to do business, I'm guessing less than 30% of each is profit. Then calc in the limited sales due to the niche group...well, those guys are truly doing this out of a labor of love cause ain't no one getting rich.
I will be ordering a commercial one just to support these guys!

Well.......do we get to see the finished product? You know us DIY guys gotta have some pics! Lol

Looks great! I thought about going with larger foot areas on mine too but since i cant yet weld ( have a welder coming my way and a father in law that has been welding for over 20yrs as a profession) i went with what would be easiest for him to tack together for me.Screenshot_20190428-193051_Gallery.jpg

Ok, the drawback to the perch is that it can loosen up, I've been looking at this for a whole and believe the back portion should have an inside vertical post or side bar to fit snuggly against the rear inside step wall. This would help elevate that small amount of movement...hope you can picture what I'm suggesting or I will draw you a picture...

Aluminum, weighs just 1.20 pounds....Apple tree is probably the softest bark tree I have at home to try it on. I love it because I am running late on presets but will have 10 WE steps hung waiting for me and my DIY for opening of bow season. Dimensions real close to OEM 17 1/2" wide 8" from tree. So far it is so tight have to put it in the vise to remove it from the step. Only plan to hunt each preset once anyway!
