any ideas on how to quiet overall metal suspender connections?

I was hunting in my warm weather bibs yesterday and was reminded that the metal suspender connections make a metal jiggly noise when you move around.

I posted a picture of the connection, in case anyone hasn't seen this brand/type before or it's been a while.

The metal wire ends do not come together under the suspender fabric but at the opposite end where it looks like a pirate's hat from long john silvers. This pirate hat covers the heavy wire ends and is also somewhat loose. So, you have it jiggling and also the whole wire thing jiggling against the door knob post thingie that is riveted to the chest of the overalls.

I'd like this solution to quiet them down and also be somewhat durable to washing (so i'm not re-doing it all the time). I'd also like to be able to adjust the overall suspender length. Also, I don't want to go full tailoring mode (and convert the whole thing to velcro or something).

my ideas include:

1. stealth strip where the metal parts touch (con: in this application will likely come off in the washing machine

2. remove the pirate hat and put some shrink tubing over the wire, reinstall pirate hat, put tubing over it and then shrink with heat

3. sew a velcro tab that covers the whole thing once suspenders are attached.....sew hook side face down towards middle of chest and hook side face up on the side and then it just goes over all the metal like a patch

4. cut the metal wire off, slide a piece of tubing over some 7/64 amsteel and make a soft shackle loop that captures the riveted post

Any other ideas jump out at you?

i just experimented a bit more....a few wraps of electrical tape around the riveted door knob post (male end of this contraption i suppose) gets rid of the sound/play between it and the actual wire....if i can figure out a way to build that up in a way that will hold up when wet, then that could get rid of some noise

however, the little pirates hat thing still jingles...there is a hole in the bottom i could use to put epoxy in to stop it from moving around

every lightweight bibs i've seen are like this (basically camo farmer overalls with cargo pockets).....to get a high tech bib, you're gonna always get some insulation

i think i have a decent solution now

1. cut paracord and remove the core to leave the sheath
2. tie one loop of paracord sheath tight over the riveted door knob post, this keeps the metal wire from rattling on the post
3. fill pirate hat with epoxy to keep it from rattling

You ok brother? 3 posts in a row about suspender fasteners...you drink too much coffee before bed???

;)

My dad and I have both owned several pairs of overalls with those connectors. Shot lots of deer wearing then. Never gave a thought to the jingly noise.

I agree if the noise bothers you cut them off use paracord or 4” amsteel continuous loop and use rubber hog rings as a cinch or make a whoopie sling

i just did this, so thanks for the ideas

last night, i filled the pirate hats with super glue....well it turns out that to work, the two ends of the wire covered by that pirate hat need to be able spread apart inside the pirate hat in order to move around the riveted post

so, i cut the wire pieces off and took the core out of a piece of paracord and used that to make my loop using a simple overhand knot on the bottom of the loop towards shoes, instead of the rubber hog rings, i used a piece of paracord with the core intact and went around the paracord sheath loop with a poacher's knot.....works better than the original metal

now i gotta decide if i'll do my other pair or leave those as is

I wonder if you could have passed some dental floss or string serving or something in there as a cushion. A couple of wraps might quiet it down enough that you don't notice it. Maybe a dot of flexible caulk or silicone adhesive, instead of super glue?

Really, I notice it but it doesn't bother me. I assume I'm only hearing it because it's a few inches from my ear, and my quarry is more likely to hear the other noises I'm trying desperately not to make before it hears that.

Yep, you're right (inverse square law....). I usually preach the same thing and don't go out of my way for small sounds. But this was just bugging me (mildly jingling like a Christmas ornament every time I moved) to the point where I wanted to get rid of it. The paracord is working well, but I probably won't do any other overalls like this until I use my mod'ed ones and wash them and make sure they hold up.

I searched high and low....and I don't think that technical lightweight bibs exist. I'd like a pair just like my nice bibs but without insulation....but all I can find are camo farmer overalls with these metal clasps, no boot zips, and a cotton-poly blend!

Every now and again Sportsamansguide and MidwayUSA have oddball hunting clothing on offer. I've got a tote someplace with camo cargo bibs, but offhand I can't remember if they have the traditional attachment you're showing or use a plastic buckle.

It would be a bit more ambitious but you could retrofit a pair with plastic buckles, like some of the industrial-strength rain bibs.

I was going to DIY something like this: https://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/pants/pant_accessories/revit/strapper_suspenders.html only use a belt tunnel instead of a zipper. Still might, but I've got too many projects going at the moment to start another.

Bad faith question, I've never ever met a real person that washes their bibs.
