From reading, it seems deer hides aren't great for their "fur" because it's too brittle, but they make nice leather products. I'm interested in doing something nice with my next one, and I'd love to hear what y'all do (if anything) with yours.

I dont make them but I use deer hide welding gloves. The deer hide is softer than pig hide, less likely to sweat up and dry out..... make some sweet general purpose gloves

I have brain tanned one before. I removed the fur, scraped the hid, then tanned and smoked it. I have made sheaths, moccasins, lots of "shoe lace" like material with it, it was fun, and useful. I will do it again when time permits.

Their fur is not too brittle. I get almost every hide soft tanned. They come out incredibly soft. We either drape them on the couch or just store them. Maybe I'll make something with them one day.

I have made rawhide out of a couple in the past and then I use the rawhide to back self bows that I build.

If you are a paying member if this forum and want a soft tan on any critter I'll get it taken care of for you at cost+shipping. Just send me a pm.

I am a taxidermist so I'll just be passing the tannery charge along to you and including your hide with my regular shipments. Cheers.
