Looking for some opinions. My coworker has built 6 ars now. He has the fixtures to allow you to machine the lowers. He has finally talked me into one, on the stipulation that he let's me do the work and he just oversees.
The gun will be primarily hunting rifle. Max yardage on shots I'm wanting to shot 200-250yd. Wanting a bush gun with a little reach. Hog and whitetail with more emphasize on hogs.....
6.5 grendel, 300 blackout, or .450 bushmaster. Those are the calibers of uppers i can find I'm interested in from the company he recommended. Any feedback from owners would be greatly appreciated. I've never owned any of them......keep in mind i shoot 600+gr arrows so you know which I'm leaning towards but open to all 3.

6.5 grendel for that range, maybe. You’ll need the lighter bullets. 300 black is like a 30/30 keep it under 100 maybe a little more 300 bl has more readily available ammo right now. No experience with the 450.

I’ve built numerous ARs and it’s a load of fun! .300 blackout is great if you run it suppressed but sub-sonic rounds aren’t that great for hunting at the ranges you’re wanting to shoot. If you wanna run supers then it’s a fine option I think. No experience with the other calibers. I can bet that you’ll be able to find a larger and more affordable selection of .300 BLK ammo compared to the other two.

Are you talking about milling your own lower from an 80%? And is this your first build?

If youre looking for range and low recoil 6.5 grendel. For a good all around bush gun 300 blackout is the way to go... but as mentioned abouve shoot the supersonic rounds if youre not planning on running suppressed. AR builds are fun... have fun with the detent springs lol

@Weldabeast I don’t know your machining experience but I’ve seen some really butchered 80% lowers. To a point where operation of the gun is dangerous. However, I’ve also seen some that have worked fine. I guess it all depends on how good his equipment and how well can can machine it.

I would recommend getting a spikes or aero lower, but Anderson or PSA makes a cheaper lower. Not as good quality as the others but I’ve got a couple rifles that have Anderson lowers and they’re fine. I would say that you should definitely get good quality products tho. I’ve built and been frustrated with too many “cheap” Ar builds. Buy once, cry once.

What brand uppers you looking at?

As long as you don’t live in a state like me(MA) and can buy a lower for 50-100$ I’d go that route b4 building a 80 but that’s just my opinion.

Considering 200 to 250 yard shots the best choice is 6.5 Grendel. Bear Creek will replace the barrel if there are obvious defects. They replaced two of mine.

I would do a 16” barrel 308 ar10 for those needs. All the power and range you will ever need. Second choice would be 6.8spc. Third choice would be 6.5 Grendel. The Grendel is good but they like long barrels and don’t carry a lot of down range energy. Just my opinion.

With that max yardage go for the 450. It is very accurate and a hard hitter. I have one and it is sub-MOA out to 300yds. I put a muzzleloader scope on it and the reticle marks line up perfect out to 300. If you travel, you can use it for deer in the northern straightwalled cartridge areas

Oh no, your screwed.. once you do 1 build you will be hooked. I have done 2 80% builds and getting ready to start another for that exact purpose...IMO all of them rounds are a tad underpowered at 250 yards, .300 blackout makes a damn fine 100-150yard gun for deer as the ballistics are very similar to 3030...
I would look into doing an AR10 in either 6.5creedmoor or .308. This time around I am doing a ar10 in .308... PM me when you start the build we can shoot some gun porn pics back and forth! It's a ton of fun.

There are other reasons beyond price for milling one out of an 80% lower, just saying.

And yes, once you build one you’re ruined. Black rifle disease is serious and not to be taken lightly.
