Ar build

We've used the 300 Blackout to good effect out to 100 yards using hand loaded 125 grain Hornady SSTs. The only reason we use the Blackouts they are effectively suppressed and efficient with a 10.5" barrel. If I wasn't interested in suppressing I'd skip the Blackout and choose the 6.5 or 450.
While most of our deer and hogs are taken at ranges under 100 yards, we do have a few places where we can shoot out to 300 yards. For anything over 100, the 6.8 SPC has proven itself over and over. Effective bullets are 120 grain Hornady SST and the 95 grain Barnes TTSX.
This is a good time to be building your AR. If the past is any indication, next year's election will induce panic buying, drive prices up and cause shortages. Good luck.

With that max yardage go for the 450. It is very accurate and a hard hitter. I have one and it is sub-MOA out to 300yds. I put a muzzleloader scope on it and the reticle marks line up perfect out to 300. If you travel, you can use it for deer in the northern straightwalled cartridge areas
Haveyou had any cycling issues?

The .450 Bushmaster uses an AR15 receiver. I have a Davidson Defense build in .450 Bushmaster. Have not even shot it yet but I got the upper receiver and put it together with the help of a friend. They had the upper receiver kit on sale for like $139. I just had to get a special magazine, a muzzle guard and a beefier bolt which the .450 Bushmaster and the .458 SOCOM are interchangeable in that regard. I have no experience with 80% lowers but I can tell you this upper fits perfectly on all three of my AR15 lowers which are Anderson, Stag Arms and RGuns our of TX. For this build and because I am in NY, I didn't want to pin the magazine to the lower receiver so the gas block is just a bar and no gas tube connected so it will not cycle. I have a modified BCG which allows me to cycle the action like a bolt action. With this I can have all the fun stuff like the muzzle guard, pistol grip, collapsible stock etc. Nice light package and will be a great round for deer and bear during the regular firearms season here in NY. Have fun but I recommend the .450 Bush if you want it for both deer and hogs.

Here's the top of the barrel before the muzzlebrake area. I have one just haven't installed it yet. 1:24" slow twist rate for that big bullet..450 Bushmaster3.jpg

I'm not an AR shooter so there may be other considerations specific to that platform I'm not up on but of the chamberings on the list I'd go with the 6.5 Grendel for a little more range or 350L based on experience with the 357 Max and keep shots sub-200 yrds.

Im surprised I'm the only one that's mentioned 6.8 SPC. It was made for your exact use case. Developed by Remington and the US Army Marksmanship Unit. It's a good consistent round made for the AR15.

If you don’t mind me asking, who instructed you to order from that company? Bear creek isn’t known for having the best quality. I’ve shot several of their uppers and some are tack drivers, and some shoot groups that look like a shotgun. The barrels themselves seem to shoot better, so if you are dead set on buying from them I would order a 6.8 spc barrel from them and build the rest of your upper using other manufacturers parts

My coworker who owns the fixture and who has done this before recommended those upper. I'm totally new to anything ar. I owned an ar15 19 years ago and hated it. The only reason I'm even interested is the affordability and no paperwork. Don't really need another rifle but being able to build it myself appeals to me......

In that case I would buy the 6.8 spc barrel that bear creek makes and then buy a decent quality bolt carrier group for it. Tool craft makes a very nice one for $80. Buy an upper receiver for $30-$40 depending on the brand and then the only other things would be your gas block/gas tube and your handguard. The 6.5 Grendel is a good round but it’s purpose is for longer ranges. 300 blackout’s ballistics are similar to a 30-30 so it’s meant for short range work. 6.8 spc has the capability to reach out and shoot long range but it’s also a killer short range gun. Every thing I’ve shot with mine has either dropped immediately or ran a max of ~50 yards

I built a 6.8 upper for mine and took it out west for antelope and mule deer does. I sold it after that trip. I hit a doe and she never flinched. Pumped 6 or 7 more rounds into her thinking I was missing. Found her and can't remember if I had to put another one in her to finish her off but I think so. Ended up I was hitting her every time - just didn't have the knock-down power I was used to with my 30-06. YMMV, just my experience.

What bullet were you using?
