Arborist Accident - friction hitches

Prayers for the family. A sobering incident like this always leaves us with a multitude of questions, and almost always could have been prevented in one way or another... Judgement and complacency in the moment always leave something to be desired, ask me, I know... Familiarity breeds complacency. I rec climb and do some arborist work at height, so I do understand some of the challenges, but you will never fully realize the mental/physical state of the individual during the stress event. Therefore, it is always best to focus on prevention vs. solution to the problem. Not saying that knowledge to solve basic issues should not be practiced or familiar. Be safe out there people, and run your saw with two hands away from your ropes!

Sorry for your lost and for his family. Prayers sent. Story like this is why I carry a tourniquet within easy access now and I hope we can all cherish the time we have, and not take anything for granted.

Sad situation. It is one tough occupation. Almost always young guys cut down in their prime Arborists had 14x the fatality rate of the average occupation last year. Climbing accidents killed the most people.

As it relates to tree climbing for hunting, I don't have a dog in the mechanical vs. friction hitch debate. I think both can be adopted way too laissez-faire, and can promote an inherent safety superiority that negligibly exists if at all. One must be aware both still carry risks, and not just knowing common risks, but practicing how to get out of the jams either can be prone to.

I’m an EM doctor, I’ve see quite a few people bleed to death or come damn close. A CAT-7 lives on the outside of all my hunting packs in a NAR pouch. I have a trauma kit with compression dressing, combat gauze, chest seal, and thoracostomy needle that I move between bag depending on the season. I also keep a SAM splint and NAR survival wrap somewhere in the pack or between the frame and pack.

I’m tempted to add a tourniquet to my saddle itself, they aren’t heavy.

The throw kits that were linked earlier are great options too, little bulkier than I like but it’s got really everything most people need and is sealed very nicely.

I’ve got TQ’s everywhere and all types. I carry an ECT on my off duty belt every day in a homemade horizontal carrier and a H&H mini compression in my pocket:

When on duty, I have an ankle holster with a:
H&H mini compression
H&H compressed gauze
2 chest seals (common brand, name escapes me ATM)

And a Sof-T Wide in my leg pocket. The TQ is separate as my leg pocket is easily reachable in any position.

I also have an ECT and CAT in my POV and another CAT/ mini compression in my hunting bag. Use to also carry a thoracostomy needle but needed it to lance something and the rules have changed preventing me from getting more.

Edit: This thread got me back on the internet and after some searching, I found a website I could buy single Dart's from. Once again, this website has cost me money.
