Are we unsafe?

Ain’t it the truth. They took all of ours. We had one in each bucket. Something about testing or such made them decide to issue 12’ finger stick or shotgun sticks with the finger on the end. Im
Not paying a small fortune for one either.
Yea our trouble shooters are the only ones allowed to have the short extendo’s now. The shortest hot sticks we have now are the 8’ shotgun sticks. You’ll see guys pull the top 2 sections out of a 40’ extendo and use it that way instead though lol

I have a triangle extendo I can take apart. Just still to long for laurel thicket

@Lowg08 " Our company preaches. Plan to fail safely. "

Motorcyclists might recognize the acronym ATGATT - "All The Gear, All The Time" - helmet, leathers, gloves, boots, etc. "Dress for the crash, not the ride". Same mindset here.

That’s right… because nearly everything works well until it doesn’t. It’s planning for the unplanned that saves lives

This mind set has lead me to add a hollow block behind my madrock. Also my accident has lead me to think about it. I had to crawl/hop back to my truck to get help and now I think about what if it happened while I was 3 miles back.

5 years on this forum leads me to believe that on the whole saddle hunting is no safer than any other method of hunting elevated. It's not the gear, it's the brain using it. Most people assess risk poorly, myself included.

It's why I ground hunt more now

I think I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter what I use to sit elevated, part of me is still uneasy. I think the argument for saddles comes from people that hunted out of stands without a harness and luckily never had a fall. I feel more secure in a full body harness and my back against the tree. But nothing is a safer than sitting at ground level. Also easier to be mobile.

On the rope diameter for climbing rope, specifically, no.

General knowledge of hazards and risks, and establishment of standards and best practices, absolutely. Still vast majority of accidents are going to be error, not equipment.
