Anyone directly related to building, selling strut assembly for passenger cars? I see lots of no name ones out there. My initial thought is they are all made in the same place, get a different sticker and box and distributed to different places. Outside of maybe Monroe? Or am I wrong?
Need to replace the ones on my car. I have used Monroe's and some off brands. The off brand worked. So not sure how much deviation there is between them.
Thoughts?
 
I know a guy that fabricates off road products. Here is what he’s told me in the past cuz I’ve asked this question before:
Years ago many brands fabricated or had built for them their own product which they r&d’d and then just had built. Now lots of stuff is outsourced and they just slap their label on it, OEM brands included with the difference being OEM often is built to a stricter standard. So in the case of struts OEM will be sealed better and built with better internals and also be tuned to the vehicle ie I wouldn’t buy basic struts for my 7k lb suburban when it really needs a good quality strut. Same goes for lots of parts. Compare an $89 alternator with an oem $200 alternator and often times the difference will be immediately obvious especially in these post covid times. that’s why if you go on say rock autos website they have the good/better/best options
Not saying it’s always the case tho. My dad is head of maintenance on a farm for all the heavy diesels and tractors and he tells me sticking with name brand is always best. Not sure if that answered your question.

Yeah. Kinda does. If I'm gonna purchase cheaper ones. Might as well get the cheapest I can get, because they are probably all the same. Or go all in on the OEM stuff. With a car at 190k I always ask the question. How much longer is it going to last? Plus it's not a classic. It's 05 sedan.
 
Earlier this year I used the fully assembled KYB struts on my Legacy GT, so that I didn't need to worry about compressing the spring. Just jack it up, unbolt, rebolt, align. KYB is the OEM of Subaru's struts.

And then I traded it in for a new WRX because there were other things that were wrong.
