Baiting conflicts

In Ontario you can bait for whitetails. Well, my dad can’t walk too well and wanted to bait on a crossing that was about 150 yards to the truck so he can still be in the game. I figured no problem as I just honestly feel bad that he just can’t hunt like he used to. Anyways, we baited and only until a couple days ago the action started to heat up. He told me that he might not be able to hunt this shotgun season(this Monday) and when he says that, it means he ain’t hunting it.
I don’t hunt over bait. Maybe it’s a moral thing or i feel like it’s not the “macho” thing to do. But then i saw my target buck find my dads pile and since it’s public land i worry that other hunters will hunt his pile and smash this buck. Would you set aside your morals to take the target out?

Tough spot, a buck like that and I'm in the tree. Will you still get sleep, will you tell everyone, yeah but he was shot over bait? In maryland only private land can hunt over bait, and most do, so my public lifestyle can tell when neighbors start baiting.

If your deer up there are anything like our deer down here (South Georgia), he won’t be anywhere near that bait pile during daylight hours. However, if you believe he will visit it during daylight, try and catch him coming to it or leaving it. Then at least your not hunting directly over the bait if that makes you feel better.

I can live with that. He is there just before legal lately. He was cruising during lunch time on my brothers cam 300 yards away a week and a half ago(rut for us). Looks like he settled down a bit. Thanks for the comment

How high do you have that camera? Any problems with them picking it off, I always run mine low and it’s time for a change, especially on scrapes that I wana hunt. Thanks

You or your dad has already spent the money on the corn so you might as well take advantage of it. Sidenote:if you can bait on public ground, id advise using camo'd corn so you dont tip people off to your spots/cameras.

As to the macho or real hunter thing ...do you care more about filling the freezer or about the story telling? If you've been a successful hunter long enough, youve probably got plenty of good deer stories.

Not a fan of baiting myself, mainly because I know that around here, the deer will get very little of it. I prefer other people to bait deer then pay me to catch the raccoons ..

It is 9ft up and using a tactacam reveal x. The red line on screen setup goes right on top of the bait pile. Also the sensitivity is level 9 and all i can say are good things about this camera. Weak/moderate signal fyi

I am warming up to the idea. After re-reading my post and reading the comments it definitely makes more sense to hunt it. My brother runs a bait pile as well and has had a hunter hunt it and another hunter swiped his sd card. Tough go on public even with bait round here

I despise baiting, but you put it there for your dad so if he can’t hunt it then you should hunt it without remorse. It’s legal so ultimately it only matters what you think about it.

Same here, I have 5 reveal x cameras with zero problems, I’m impressed with them, go kill that buck!!!

If we hunted without the aid of how hunting has evolved, we would be hunting naked with a stick.

have you ever killed a buck like that with your bow? If not, get it. If so, still get it. Unless you don’t want to.

I think I could get past the baiting issue. Man has always hunted over bait of some sort. I'm primarily a traditional archery hunter and I hear all sorts of conflicts. Many object to the use of cameras. Kill the deer.

Shoot the buck and give the mount or euro mount to your Dad. And thereby honor your father.
Probably what I’d do.

Is a guy who shoots a spike over bait with traditional archery equipment less of a hunter than an eight year old girl who shoots a monster buck in a food plot with a rifle from daddy’s heated blind? The circumstances that we deer hunt in are different for everyone. Therefore, you cannot apply a one size fits all philosophy towards hunting. We all have to make our own choices about how we want to hunt. If you are opposed to hunting over bait, then don’t do it. However, you should not let other people make decisions on what is best for you. I am sure that your situation is different from theirs and they do not know all of the things that you are up against. Do those who claim to be opposed to hunting over bait refuse to hunt near a tree that is dropping acorns? If they hunt over an apple tree that is dropping apples in October, is it really any different if someone throws out a few apples under that same tree a couple of weeks later? What is the difference between shooting a buck that is distracted by the rut and one that is distracted by the smell of food?

If you choose to hunt deer the hard way, I respect that choice. Most of us have to work and have family obligations, so we do not have unlimited time to wait for a shooter deer to show up in range. Baiting just might be that little extra that you need to draw a deer in closer or to get a clear shot. I believe that it is far better to use bait to improve your chances for a clean kill than to take a risky desperation shot through brush, because it is the only opportunity that you might get. Stay within the law, and do what is best for you. If you are hunting pressured deer on public land, I think that you will find that putting out some bait does not guarantee you anything.
