Baiting For Deer, Do you do Bait?

definitely
Alot of things can be changed on private.
You can barely take a leak on public anymore.
Its nice when you can dictate what goes on and minimize intrusion. It’s definitely a better situation for consistency of patterning bucks snd actually dictating food, travel , and security.
Thats just not possible on public.

Can you fertilize on public ground? I can’t find any regulations saying otherwise in GA. I can’t even find the reg where you can’t use a screw in bow holder.

No clue on the fertilizer but it probably falls under baiting. The other one is because you can use a screw in bow holder on public.

I hope they never bring baiting back in Michigan. Ever since baiting has been banned the bucks keep getting bigger. The genetic lines for bigger racks has come back. We actually have 1.5 year old bucks surviving in our neighborhood now. The we have more 2.5's, 3.5's and so on. It is actually worth hunting here again. Instead of chasing one or two ghosts in the whole county I have 4 bucks behind my house worth chasing. I have never seen the bucks that I have seen in the last couple years in my entire life hunting in mi. Never saw stuff like this when baiting was allowed. I know there are still people baiting, but they aren't dumping a dump truck of beats in the woods like they used to.Screenshot_20230819-184722.pngScreenshot_20230823-055156.pngScreenshot_20230811-203543.pngScreenshot_20230811-203557.png

There are other ways to bait without dumping piles. Fertilizing/relocating natural browse flies waaay under the radar. If you haven't thought about it, consider this a pro tip.....lol.

I am not sure Nj wants dead deer thats all they want its obvious so, in my opinion you can probably dump anything that of course is not bad for the environment. again I am not certain though lol

The closest I get to baiting is chucking my apple core on the ground after I'm done eating it. Its Illegal on public here and I don't have any private land. I have found a corn pile and a mineral lick when preseason scouting in the woods on public though so obviously people break the law. Didn't hunt either location but I marked where they are to track. I should go back and see if the lawbreakers are repetitive or if they move around but have found some "better" (I think) spots on my own/with advice from other hunters and forum members.

Full disclosure- first deer I shot was on the border of public/private with a feeder. I bumped it walking out and it ran back onto public, a few hundred yards of spot and stalk later I shot my first doe. So I guess I kinda hunted bait once? And was also a few hrs late getting home but it was worth it.

I don’t think it’s the genes have returned. Just the age structure is improved. Similar to how antler point restrictions and limiting buck tags to 1-per really shows up in a given areas buck quality.

While I personally choose to hunt for nice rack bucks, I also know others who enjoy hunting aren’t so picky. Be it limited time, limited skill, “buck is a buck” thinking…whatever…producing more big bucks isn’t one of the reasons I vote no to baiting.

The genes have been here. But they were not dominant for a lot of years. Natural selection around here punished the gene lines for bigger racks. The bigger 1.5s got killed before the smaller ones.

I don't have a problem with people going out and killing smaller bucks and does. Just do it hunting. They are not that hard to pattern and kill. Never going to learn how to target the bigger ones sitting on a pile all day. Before someone blasts me for someone shooting a monster on bait. They do make mistakes every once in a while and people do get lucky also.

I am a 100% believer in deer habitat though. Food plots, water holes clear cuts. I will spendy money on making a place somewhere a deer wants to live then dumping piles on the ground. Doesn't make the big ones that much easier to kill. They are still smart as heck and use wind to their advantage all the time.
