Looking at getting some new base layers, Merino Wool.

Think I am favoring the FIRST LITE MEN'S FUSE LONG JOHN - if I need more in future I can overlay with the FURNACE ones looks like (?)
For those that have, size seem true, I wear a 36 size in jeans but would wear 35 if they made them. 5'10 175, what size large? Medium? They shrink?
Was thinking the heavier FURNACE at first but those may be too warm for some of the October Michigan days.

For those that have them, thoughts or experiences, recommendations appreciated.

Sierra Trading Post usually has a bunch of different merino wool base layers in the $35-50 range.

I love my FL stuff. I’m a 32 waist and the medium fits me perfect. At 36 you might be large. Their size charts are helpful and they also seem pretty responsive through chat support.

I haven’t noticed any shrinking but I follow they’re care instructions and dry them in gentle mode.

By the way, I asked about ozone and they said it was not recommended for their products.

I have been wearing Merino for 30+ years. Here is what I know. It all eventually gets holes in it. Look for deals. Sierra Trading Post, Steep and Cheap, etc.
I have had FL, IceBreaker, Smart Wool, Minus 33, Terramar, Stoic etc.
they all get holes eventually. Can’t beat merino for base layer.

I have used first lites marino wool base layer for about 9 years and love it. I wouldnt consider hunting without marino wool against my skin in all temps now that im spoiled from using it. I know the stuff is spendy but its also tough and lasts.. Keeps ya cooler in the early season and warm in the cold season. Its a good purchase, i dont think youll be disappointed.

FL rocks for sure, but I agree with what others have said about deal shopping. I have a couple LL Bean merino 1/4 zips, and an icebreaker l/s crewneck that have all served me well. FWIW, my Icebreaker has a couple small holes in it but I’ve also worn and washed it a bunch in the three years I’ve had it. The Bean merino shirts are still going strong after 2 years.

I am 5 11” 175 and I wear medium in first lite base layers. I have tried the larges and they were doable but I though the arms were a touch long and I like my base layers not as loose. I bought the fuse and furnace combo as well but haven’t hunted out of them yet.

I buy A TON of stuff off STP. All "brand name", even if it's a European brand name, and you can get some killer deals, especially if you are a non-popular size.

Get your merino wool from www.skregear.com. Unconditional, lifetime warranty on all of their clothing.

How is the ECWCS stuff from Cabela's? Don't think it's wool though.
You can buy similar waffle patterned stuff from military overstock section in Sportsmans Guide for a lot less. I bought a set for my son and he loves them. Wears them hunting and skiing.
