Bear Season!

If you had a bear at the base of your tree, where would you aim while shooting straight down? I was told top of head but i would think upper back between shoulders? Serious question as several times I have bears at my tree before i knew it. I didnt know if season was open as its a quota so let several walk.

Weapon of choice?

I shot straight down with a bow at a bear at the base of my tree a couple of seasons ago.

He initially started to climb up, well first he stood on his hind legs with his front paws on the tree sniffing in the air but when he pulled himself up and put his hind legs on the tree, I guess to climb up and investigate the source of what he was smelling, I calmly said "Hey bear" which made him cautiously retreat to terra firma. He then put himself in a prone position with his front legs out in front of him facing away from the tree, the pose reminded me of the statue of a Sphinx and began eating berries and nuts.

I aimed just behind the shoulders to the left of his spine with a 415gr two blade rage tipped arrow. Went through him like butter and exited out his chest. He yelped at impact and ran 60yds downhill to his final resting spot.

Had a bear sniffing the base of my tree but not start climbing.that was hairy enough

I've had two other bear encounters where they each have stood up at the base of my tree and began sniffing. The first time was hair raising for sure but now I expect it. I also carry .45 bear repellent if things should get too up close and personal...

Yeah our season for bears opens the same as for deer. 10/1. I have probably a 175 to 250 pounder on my trail cam. The last several years they have ravaged the sawtooth oaks my buddy and I planted on his property but they typically are causing the damage before October 1st. We aren't allowed to bait in NY so I'm just setting up for deer and if one comes by, I'll shoot it. You also aren't allowed to shoot bears in a group.... has to be a singular bear. I've never shot one as we are just starting to get decent numbers in my area over the last 15 years. We see them every year now so its probably just a matter of time. You can't take a firearm with you at all while you're bowhunting either which keeps things a little hairy when you're walking in way before to get setup. You are allowed to use lures and predator call, I was thinking of trying some bear lure sprayer and doing a little predator calling to see what comes into the saddle if I have an unproductive sit for a buck. Have any of you bear hunters had any luck with those tactics??

Pulled the card from a trailcam I have on the hill behind my house and found this guy.
The large tree behind him is two feet in diameter and the camera is about eight feet up. The trail he is walking on is slightly uphill in the direction he is facing.
His belly seems close to the ground and his neck looks thick, can't really see the spread of his ears.
I'm referring to it as a boar but could it be a sow?
What do you estimate he/she measures and weighs?

^^^ From everything I can tell from the picture I'd say he's 450 or so.
Maybe only 400.
Nice bear!

I just got my ankle bracelet off and i can finally start scouting.
I've seen 5 different bears in the last week and a half...
They're doing well here!

I'm going to PA this Sunday to relocate a cellular cam and do some scouting. I'm hoping to get in on the bear action on the 16th.
Tomorrow afternoon till dark I'll be waiting for the fellow above to pass by.

What County?

After the last few years of a work buddy showing me pictures of huge bucks that he has on camera and has taken, and telling me to get over there to hunt, I finally decided to make the effort this year.

Got a darn herd of them on my trail camera.

Went to PA yesterday to move a camera and I saw this guy watching me as I was cresting the hill. He was ok with me snapping a picture but once I resumed walking in his direction he turned tail and ran off. Found a couple of large scat piles too. Bears seem to be plentiful right now so let me ask, do they disappear once the season starts the way turkeys by me usually do?

I'm taking this fresh pile a bear left for me in my favorite tree as a good omen. About a half hour into my hang I spotted him about 100yds on the neighbors property making his way up a steep hillside. I took a bear from here a couple of years ago coming down from this same hill. Maybe he's taking a nap up there and when he wakes to eat he'll pass by.20211027_143942.jpg

I had several close encounters during the first couple of weeks of North Georgia’s bow season. I finally connected on this sow coming in to a white oak tree that was dropping acorns at 6:45PM. I was hanging in my JX 3 Hybrid and had passed up a large boar hog a couple of hours earlier.
