Also consider the other tools that will use the same batteries. Milwaukee’s and dewalt’s brushless tools are probably pretty equal. I went with Milwaukee just because that’s what I was used to at work. Their fuel circular saw, sawzall, and chainsaw are all pretty sweet battery tools. It’s amazing how far they’ve come in 10 yrs. Next on my list is a hedge trimmer. I use a lot of tools at home but a lot of them can come in handy in the woods too.
 
One nice thing about the Milwaukee M12 Fuel drill motors is the smaller battery makes for a lighter weight/more compact tool. Granted, the smaller battery will drain quicker than the bigger 18 volt batteries but you can easily carry an extra or two in your back pack and not even notice your carrying them.
 
X2 on the 12v Milwaukee nice and compact will do 3-5 trees on one charge depending on how many you put in

I was checking this one out at home depot. Nice and compact. I think this is what I will be picking up for the fall.
 
I am a dewalt brushless fan. I have 5 tools (impact drill, hammer drill, drywall cutout, drywall screw gun, skill saw) and 2 2.0 batteries and 2 4.0 batteries. I love my Dewalts.

To get the best...... Do you buy from a box store? I’ve heard Lowe’s/Hone Depot products may have cheaper internal parts to hit certain price points? Is this a myth or truth?

I want to buy Contractor grade. I want it to be tough and last! Can you get this at a box store?
 
I use cordless drills every day at work drilling and tapping through Stainless Steel up to 1'' diameter holes through 1/8-1'' thick. Drills usually last 2 years max if lucky......the old style dewalt 18v used to be great but the new dewalts blow......milwaukee m18 is #1 and makita #2. Heat is what kills them. If the housing starts getting warm let it cool off for a bit and you'll extend the life of your tool. For drilling trees I'd go with milwaukee 1/4 hex impact driver with a m18 5.0 battery. The metal holder clip fits the molle on your saddle
