Best Roll Pouch

Rolling it back up nice and neat will most likely require two hands. thats the only issue I have with mine. its never as pretty and tight as when I roll it up with the saddle off
Thats why I didnt like it. I can throw my 40" of rope in a pouch madrock on top pull down line in another pouch. Its just way easier for me with way less fiddling around. When I climb If I want I can just pull out what I need but I use my extra to pull up my pack. I did lighten my pack a bunch for this year so I may wear that while climbing this year. Everyone can do what they want buy Ill say it again. There is a reason there isnt a big demand for roll pouches.

You seem to have left out a couple steps. Cant wait to see your video.

If you’re talking about packing out the roll pouch, that is not done in the tree. That’s done at the truck or in my garage well before the hunt. Any operation that needs to be done with the roll pouch while in the tree can easily be done one handed, and that’s all I need. And as for after the rappel, the rope gets stuffed in my pack for the hike out. Gets reset in the roll pouch before the next hunt. I can’t imagine why it would need to be done differently, but to each their own.

I can understand that a lot. Im still trying to figure out a design that gives both rolled up function so it's held close to your side giving a more streamlined look and feel to stop the swaying and snagging as well as the convenience of a dump pouch. Maybe it's my OCD but there has to be a way to have the best of both worlds.

Exactly you cant operate it one handed. If wearing a pouch and only using it half the time and moving ropes and gear from here to there and screwing around at the truck makes sense to you. Have at it lol. When I get to the truck I want to be done.

We just operate differently, then. I like to setup my gear and inspect everything right before I use it. Also helps me to know that everything is accounted for. But doesn't change the fact that the roll pouch is one-hand operation for me and the way that I use it when actually climbing and hunting.

lol,that we can agree on

lol,that we can agree on

But to the one-handed point. Are you saying that you fill and close your dump pouch one-handed?? I use dump pouches as well, and they are typically a two-handed operation for me when filling them with gear. So, for me, there is no difference when it comes to one-hand operation of either.

Absolutely yes. I figure 8 my rope and can stuff it in there one handed no problem. Im a plump guy. Pouchs on saddles seem to ride back anyway. I dont even really have the choice to use two hands on a pouch or roll pou h
I was full on with a roll pouch. I even made my own following a post in the DIY section of these forums. Impressed the hell out of my GF lol. It wasnt even a hunt just a practice climb to do an observation sit and I was done with it.

@Jeremy_D , IMHO It seems that you two are arguing which one tastes better, the apple or the orange? @Spartan I'll include you as well. I'm sure that we can all agree that what works well for one might not for the other. We all know that our set up is tailored to the way that works best for us. The thing is both of you are right. It's easy to use a dump pouch one handed. For example, I can stuff my 30 feet of rope in a dump pouch after I figure 8 it and fold it into a smaller bundle, I leave about a 6 foot length unfolded then I coil that up and set it on top then close the pouch. No issues works just fine. I have a roll pouch as well, so Jeremy, I have no issue deploying that one handed when I'm ready to rappel down. Once on the ground I can still figure 8 my rope, fold it once again put it back into my roll pouch and roll it up with one hand. As with both a dump pouch or roll pouch, you still have to use your off hand to sinch it tight either way. So either one works just fine. The only difference I see in both of your statements is this. One likes to tidy things up before getting to the truck and the other doesn't mind taking a few more minutes to tidy things up at the truck or at home. Now as for me, because I'm particular in how I pack both. On my left side I have a small two pocket pouch that will hold my tether, my pull up/retrieval rope, my headlamp, my aider for one sticking and a clothes pin that I use for holding my rappel rope tight against the tree before i put my weight on it. In the smaller pocket I keep my gear hanger strap, S-biners, my backband and a few misc. items. Everything is packed in the order that I will need it as I need it. It's all put away in the reverse order so I can get it only when I need it, no digging around to find what I need. On my right side is my dump pouch or roll pouch that is packed the same way. So when it's all said and done and I'm ready to walk out. Everything is nice and neat and ready for the next hunt. But a mistake may be made when packing up and I still may have to go through and reorganize my stuff once I'm home. Do you guys see where this is going? It's all about what works best for the person. No need for arguing one way verses another. If it doesn't work for you then use what does work. Remember these forums are to support each other and help one another. Don't lose sight of why we are here in the first place. To share our thoughts and experiences for the same passion. I hope Y'all have a wonderful season this year and I hope to be reading more form you both.

@Schemeecho I very much appreciate your thoughts on your use of dump/roll pouches. But I'm less appreciative of what I feel is a condescending and preachy tone about how Jeremy_D or I should communicate with each other or in this thread. Sure, there was a bit of passion behind our words, but I don't think that anyone could say it wasn't civil. So to speak to your comments: I have not lost sight of why we are here, and I am sharing my thoughts and experiences for the same passion. We're all aware that everybody does things differently, and that that will often lead to some interesting and sometimes animated exchanges. Doesn't mean that anybody needs to step in to try and quell some civil and spirited debate....about pouches

That wasnt my intent brother. Just thought it was just turning into a debate over why someone's opinion was better than another. Sorry you felt it was condescending and preachy. I didn't say it wasn't civil. You both were civil and nothing wrong with passion in your words. Maybe the issue with my comment was that its hard to convey a tone of voice through just words in a post. So for that I apologize if I came across in that way. I was only trying to explain in detail my feelings on the subject and why I felt the way I do about both pouches and having different options for us. I wasnt trying to stop a debate.

I use both. I’ve got a Beaston pouch on my left and a dump on my right. I use both hands on both at times, depending on what I’m doing. I’m not a minimalist and love having plenty of space to put stuff. My dump pouch also has two side pockets and together, my saddle isn’t very streamlined. I can still turn around on my platform(to pee) but have to scootch my butt away from the tree a bit. I’ve done it so many times now I hardly notice the bulk .

And another thumbs up for @beaston !! Thank you as well sir! I apologize it took so long but it got put away an….Love mine! Very good organizer an extremely well made!

I’ve been thinking of trying a roll pouch for climbing with bolts and a woodpecker drill. I figured it would be easier to access them as I go up the tree, and they would be quieter in the pouch rolled up on your belt than they are in the pouch from treehopper.

I bought a bolt pouch from @Squirrels a few years ago so never tried using one of my roll pouches. Only thing is the bolts will be loose as you climb so when accessing them they will create noise compared to being separated by elastic sleeves.

I tried a different method the other day and this is what I came up with. I take my length of rope coil around my elbow and hand. Then take a Amsteel strap with a loop on both ends and cinch around the coil, place loop around my right arm. After doing this I run the other end of the Amsteel behind my neck to a small carabiner on my saddle and more or less wear my rope like a half of shirt. Seems to hold tight and easily deployed.

To clarify I place the rope coil over my right arm and wear it with the Amsteel holding it together and tight across my shoulders.

Ok, i've got a few sits in saddle now and i've come to the conclusion that the roll pouch is not growing on me. I'm not a huge guy by any means, but i'm pretty stocky and the roll pouch is hard for me to work with due to the position on my saddle an yes its the most forward position. (Not very flexible and shoulder issues lol) I find myself struggling to hook the straps lol and exerting way more energy than I need to. So my thoughts are to just attach the pouch to my pack on the molly's on my pack. Anyone do this? I have 40' of canyon which is probably 10' more than I need...

Thoughts?
