Boat buckle overcenter buckle (OCB, boatbuckle)

I don't think the boatbuckle should be enclosed within a sewn loop like that. The strap should go through the guide slots and the metal bar that is currently inside your sewn loop is where the hook would attach.

So the way it should work is you would hold on to the end with the flat hook and put the strap around the tree. Then feed the end without the hook through the guide slots of the boatbuckle (in and then back through in the opposite direction - see video) and attach the hook to the buckle. Now you would be able to take up all the slack by pulling the free end until the whole strap cinches to the tree. Then you would cam the buckle over to really take out the rest of the slack and lock it place.

Check out this video for how to attach the buckle (I started it right where the buckle is attached... you could start the video a bit sooner if you wish)

Yea, that won't work. I don't know anything about that one in particular but I bet you can cut the end tied to the buckle and then thread it through the buckle so it will work.

I mentioned this in the thread once and maybe I am crazy but, I think the strap @Crossfire64 bought is just the fixed end of the strap. The description from his link says "1 Inch Quick Release Buckle Fixed End". He ordered it as an 8' long fixed end. He still needs the tag end of the strap like shown in this pic:

But, I agree that he could cut off the buckle and thread the strap through the OCB and hook it to the frame of the buckle.

I agree with you. He doesn't need the tag end anyways.

I believe this is just one long strap - the boatbuckle looped in on one end, and the hook on the other. He can cut the buckle end off and then feed the new cut end through the guides of the buckle.

I was trying to make the transition from a ratchet strap to the over center boat buckle (pictured above) I found this through the link on comment #176. I sounds like lots of folks are using this strap for their step platforms. But I just see no way to adjust this strap. It'll kinda work if the tree is exactly 8ft around. Even the manufacturer couldn't explain how thread the strap through the buckle and adjust it.

You ordered the same strap as I did and they did the same thing to mine . They sewed the strap to the buckle in error. You will have to cut the strap off of the buckle and Google how to thread it on to the buckle. Once I did this you can adjust it and it works really well.

If you want an ocb with a strap attached to just one side of the buckle with nothing on the other end of strap (so you can weave it thru the ocb for use on a ROS) then it is part#4380-C6 from CustomTieDowns.com. Once you get to the picture on their web page (see post#184) scroll down to see the variations available. Ordered a couple last night...

Hello everyone, I was able to locate the buckle that @redsquirrel said was his favorite. It is currently unavailable on amazon. I just ordered the same ocb buckle from Trailor parts superstore. I figured someone else might like to know they are available!

Been following this thread and really wanting to try this, kinda confusing lol
I'm working hard to pull something together to make this easier and have more options for people. Right now you need to source a boat buckle strap from one place, remove the strap, and then source a different strap from another place. Or buy components from one of the custom strap resellers. I have some custom straps/buckles in the mail and will test out next week. If these work, I'll go all wholesale and get some to sell with my ROSS (Ring of SquirrelSteps).

The boat buckle originally mentioned in this thread (Amazon link) is now sold out. I ordered a different one by same company that fits a 1” strap. Hope this works

I ordered a few from custom tie downs. They're called quick release buckles. Their ocb buckles are slightly different than whats talked about and shown here. Should get them in a couple of days. I'll post pics for all to see

Here is a link to the buckle that a bunch of us are currently using to tighten down our strap on step platforms: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00144 ... detailpage

Right now I am using an ameristep strap with the extra webbing that held the step in removed. If you have one of these straps this is the easiest route because it already has the little U hook sewn into it.

I was using a different buckle originally. It was a black buckle made for 2 inch webbing but it was much bigger than this one. It worked great and was pretty light, it was just bulky

You will see these buckles referred to as the OCB (over center buckle) or boat buckle frequently on the site. It usually refers to one of these buckles but generally refers to this style buckle.
How do you use the hook?

I have trees that 6’ barely touches but wouldn’t be able to attach

I’d use a 7’ minimum length & would be fine with 8’

Rather be a foot long than an inch short
