BOLTS for fat guys

Im going tomorrow for sure. I may even get a 1/2" just for fun and giggles. How much do you generally leave out of the tree with a 6" bolt? 3"? 2"?
If you bought them from Lowe's they probably weren't grade 8 bolts! The ones I got I had to order and I also found some at Industrial sales stores but I have never seen grade 8 bolts at Lowe's but maybe your Lowe's is different!

Yeah it said said grade 8 on the front of the bin. But im like you, it seemed awful flimsy for a 3/8 bolt. When I stepped up on it anyway.

Heres a way to identify bolts

You nailed @Jay_Disarray and @Weldabeast It had no marking on the head!!! Just some letters. It must be Grade 1 or 2. Not sure why it was in the wrong bin but this was very helpful. Maybe others can find this useful as well.
Thanks so much. I feel much better now. Going to go to a real hardware store tomorrow and get the right thing and now I know how to make sure I get the right thing. I'm giving you a virtual hug right now.

You were right @Recurveaholic it was a Grade 1. The bins have huge Lettering on them that say Grade 8 but I guess people picking thru them left a Grade 1 and I picked up one that someone had left, of course...thanks for the response

Just get these.

Yes grade 8 only.
And drilling at an angle is okay if its drilled at a very slight angle. Too steep of an angle forces all your weight on the very end of the bolt...essentially creating more leverage.
Also, make sure the threads are completely in the hole. Threads are the weakest part of the bolt so you do not want them sticking out past flush with the support of the tree.. Threads WITHIN the hole are what you want. Threads sticking OUT are a no-no.

Just get these.

For others late to the thread check my post, it’s quantity 50 for $32. Along with the appropriate heat shrink tubing.

Thats a really good price for grade 8. Anything under a dollar each is a decent price.

Here are a few pics and points.
A 6" bolt, when installed properly, has the same surface area inside and outside of the tree, as a quality EZ Climb screw-in step.
Heat shrink tube...use quality tube or it won't hold up. This is marine grade, 3:1 shrink ratio, with adhesive built in. And 1/2" works well but if you want the edge of the head covered, then you'll have to round off the points if its a hex bolt. A hex head can easily be grinded round in about 20 seconds on a bench grinder.

For removing bolts after a year or more that may be tight in the tree, use mini vise grips. Wrenches can be dropped and you have to hold them during the removal. Vice grips are clamped on the bolt so you can actually turn it with 1 finger without them slipping off and falling to the ground.
Vice grips are universal, too.
Over the years, a hunter will probably a a mix of hex and allen bolts...vice grips can work on both. No need to carry both hex wrench and an allen wrench.
