Booger Retrieval Device ?

In Florida I sweat my behind off to get up a tree in September . To me having some type of retrieval device is worth it wether it’s this device or a simple hook . Plus this device does have a fun factor . Gadgets are fun . I bought one and can report back on the fun factor. If it saves time that’s good too - seeing a shooter buck ( although the chances I acknowledge are lower) while climbing a second time would make me hate myself for not having that time back by spending a little money. It’s not for everybody but I’m a sucker

All good. I’m not carrying anything just in case. If I was only going to get to hunt one day a week I probably would carry more just in case items, but I’m retired so I hunt every day for 3 months. I can live without just in case for a day. I can do without what I drop (gloves) and by doing without one day, it prevents me from dropping crap for the next 3 weeks, cuz I don’t like stinky gloves laying at the bottom of my tree after I spent all the time and effort to get 25ft up in the tree to help defeat their nose. But that’s just me. Everyone gets a choice, and I don’t have a single issue with other peoples choices.

I've been known to drop multiple things in a single sit. :tearsofjoy: I'm estimating that I used my grapple successfully 5-10 times this year and had one occurrence where I couldn't fish it through the brush around the bottom of the tree so I had to remember to pick up my reading glasses after I climbed down.

Most of the time I'm inadvertently pulling gloves or a hat from my pack when I pull out my outer layers.
@Nutterbuster is just a young whipper snapper. I am like you, I drop stuff all the time. I have dropped everything out of the tree except me.

I can say I dropped myself out a tree more times than I care to remember. Luckily it was when I was @Nutterbuster's age and younger. I definitely don't want to repeat that experience now. :tearsofjoy:

I have never had problems dropping stuff out of a tree (other than maybe an occasional glove every couple of years) until this year. I carry milkweed in the pod with a rubber band around it. The second half of the season I started dropping my milkweed on almost every sit. I always have multiple pods in my pack and on several occasions I dropped more then one. It was happening so often that it went from being frustrating to comical. I realized one hunt that I was down to just two pods left in my pack so I tied a string to the rubber band of one pod and tied it to my pack. I just let the pod hang there and about halfway through the hunt the rubber band spontaneously broke and the pod fell to the ground. I couldn't do anything but laugh at that point.

This sounds snobbish, but how often do you guys drop stuff? I can't recall ever dropping anything other than maybe a water bottle. I can remember 2 times that happened in maybe 20 years of hunting up in trees. For me, an extra doo dad in case I drop my other doo dads seems silly.

Another win for the pac seat! Just lean over and pick up whatever I drop! ;)

My thoughts every time this comes up.

I’m having trouble with it . It is very sensitive and closing as I lower it even when trying to be as slow and gentle . Going to contact them to see if I got a bad one

Update : got a call from the owner . Extremely nice - gave me some advice - apparently I just got one that had a burr that needed to be grinded off - he said they’ve some thousands and this was the second one that had this burr not grinded off .

Hope it works out for you. I have never dropped anything, ever, either but now you know I will. I have a gear grappler in my cart on the EWO sight for this next season. This grabber from WCS looks interesting too though.

I'm with @boyne bowhunter on this one. I've tried several retrieval devices and always go back to a weighted treble hook. Mine has the barbs ground off and the hooks dulled. I use a 1-1/2" diameter foam plug with a hole in the center to pack it, the shank goes through the hole in the plug and the foam covers the hook points.

I would hook that thing on the first limb going down and have to climb down anyway... This little grappling hook is awesome. It's the size of chapstick when folded up.

I tried one of those, great concept, but... As I feared would happen, when It came time to use it my hands were very cold and I dropped two of the tines while assembling it in the tree. Try finding those things on the forest floor, it's impossible.

In case you haven't guessed, I drop a LOT of things while in trees.

Update #2: the owners recommendation completly fixed the problem . The booger is working like a champ . I guess mine was a rare one that needed a little TLC.

Thanks for the all the discussion - seams to be a lot of cool alternatives out there ranging from
- don’t drop your sh@t. - to magnetic hooks

question for the other people that recently purchased one.

Mine arrived today and it seems to work mechanically without any problem. but it kinda looks used. it has heat tints and isn't completely painted. I'll probably just hit it up with some spray paint. But I'm curious if this is how other people's looked.

It’s an industrial style product so I think some imperfections can be expected. Mine didn’t have blemishes that large

So I actually had to use this device during my second hunt of the year . I one sticked to the top of my tree and began pulling up my bow - my quiver hit a small low limb and fell off ! (It wasn’t secured well to the bow ) . So here I am at the top of the tree with no arrows. I was discouraged thinking I needed to rappel and re climb ….. until I remembered I had the booger !! Booger for the Win
