Boot Blankets for Saddle?

I'm planning ahead for late season this year. I get cold feet in the super cold. I wear 400gm insulated boots but still get cold after an hour. I don't want to go higher on boot insulation as I will sweat on the way in. Anyone use boot blankets from a saddle with a platform? I'm mostly curious about maneuvering around the platform the them on.

I'm a heated sock guy. Have them off or on low on the way in, then turn up as it gets cold. Works for me, not for everyone.

Yes, they work pretty well in this application. I have both the icebreaker and the artic shield. I covered the bottoms of the artic shield ones with cheap fleece from the fabric store to quiet them down. Worked well.

I’ve used the Article Shield ones with both the Silent Approach ROS as well as with the small platform on my Shikar one stick. They work fine with no issues and really help to keep my feet warm which is a problem for me.

I never wear insulated boots. I wear Lacrosse Alpha lites, and depending on the temps socks to match the weather. If it gets below 40 I wear 1 pair of wool socks. If I wear insulated boots my feet sweat and get cold. If I wear wool socks they still sweat but don’t get as cold. I spent alot of time over the past couple of decades hunting waterfowl in NE AR and the more insulation my boots had the colder I was. I changed out to uninsulated breathable waders, wool socks, and wool base layers. After I made the change I was much more comfortable. Last yr I floated my hat before daylight while busting ice, and I was able to hunt until we got our limits. Prior to switching to wool that never would have happened.

Think about this, how many times have you got setup to hunt, and had to strip out of all your clothes because you were so hot? If you get to that point, you have been sweating profusely all over your under garments. When you cool down, and aren’t wearing wool your wet clothes suck all of your body heat out. Even synthetics do this. It’s like walking into air conditioning while wearing a wet bathing suit.

Wet wool retains up to 80% of your body heat as opposed to other textiles which can be 1/2 that or less. If it were me I’d invest in several sets of wool socks, and use an uninsulated pair of boots. Wear your initial pair of wool socks for your for your hike in. Carry an extra pair in your bag, and when your feet get cold change them. I’ve hunted in some COLD conditions, and this was always more beneficial then having a super heavy pair of boots that got wet, and not be able to get my feet dry.

Also keep a wool beanie in your back pack. Don’t wear it until you become sedentary, and start cooling off. You loose 5% or more body heat through the top of your head, and wearing a wool beanie will keep a lot of that heat from escaping. I wear a SnapBack mesh ball cap until I get sedentary. It helps release heat to keep from sweating. I then put on a Radar Cap if the environment justifies it.

Last yr, a few days before Christmas, where I live in GA (just south of Atl) hit 5 degrees with a -22 windshield. It was so cold my diesel wouldn’t crank. Like an idiot I hunted all 3-4 days we had these temps. I wasn’t successful in killing a deer, but while wearing my Fanatic Suit, and my 1 pair of wool socks and boots I was warm enough to bake biscuits on my titties. I did change socks every few hours.

Sorry for the very long post.

I picked up some Gray Wolf Woolens Boot Blankets for all day rut sits and late season stuff. Have never tried this before but I think they will work great. I have put old wool socks over the toes of
hiking boots and they work ok but these should be much warmer. I got them in the Predator New Fall Gray. A bit pricey but they’ll probably last me forever. They seem sized big enough to go over most boots.https://graywolfwoolens.com/product/boot-blankets/

all the time

arctic shield boot blankets

then a hot hands super warmer (larger one) in each blanket

they should have a mesh pouch (mesh for oxygen to get to warmer) in these from the factory (since most people use the warmers) but they don't

i bought some mesh zipper pouches the right size and tack the four corners of them inside each blankets, really improves them

i positioned the pouch to be on top of my foot over my toes

I wear arctic shield boot covers. I also switched from an OOAL ridge runner to a TL mission platform midway through last year. I will say that it was easier putting them on with a larger platform.

You can also cut the toe section off of a large sock and use it to hold the handwarmer on the toes of your boots. Man I love those hand warmers. Pin two on my chest with safety pins and two in my pockets and I stay comfy. Seal them in a ziplock bag after the first hunt and I get two hunts out of them.

I wear Arctic Shields with my bogs and heated socks. I actually bought some of the North face insulated booties and tried those with the Arctic Shields and that worked really well, but it's more to carry.

When it gets really cold I wear my Baffin Titans and my feet stay toasty warm. My feet sweat a lot and the liner in the Titans is the best I have ever used for moisture transport.
After a full day in them I will pull the liner and the foot side is nice and dry and the outside of the liner and the inside of the rubber boot are soaked. I was shocked by the amout of moisture between rubber boot and the out side of the liner the first time I pulled the liner. The down side is they do not have a lot of support which I really like however they make up for it by keeping my feet warm on those cold days.
I originally bought the boots for Ice fishing however I rarely wear them for that as I move around enough that my Artic Pros with their great footbed do the job. When you are going to be stationary and the temps are sub 20 they let you forget about your feet.

Which heated socks do you have? I’ve tried some before can’t remember the brand . Didn’t work very well

Thank you all for the input! I'm going to try some kind of boot blanket. Does anyone know how to get your hands on icebreakers? Their website says they are out of stock for the season

Anyone that has used the Arctic shields, what is your experience on sizing? If using a lighter, non pack style boot, is the sizing fairly true to size?

I have one size bigger and wouldn’t go smaller. I’m size 13 and have the 2x I think.

I’m not sure why but I actually think my day to day Ariat boots seem to be as warm as my cold weather Boggs. Accidentally learned it forgetting my stuff (twice). I’m sure the scent isn’t as good as dedicated things, just a warmth observation.

this sizing is totally off due to the shape being too pointy to get a normal boot fully into the toe

everyone talks about it online, i've read 20 people say the sizing is dumb, i've emailed arctic shield twice and nicely told them something to the effect of "people don't wear pointy cowboy boots hunting, so you might want to get a selection of hunting boots to base your sizes and shapes off of"

i wear a 12 wide and wear the largest size one they make and it is still tight on my redhead trackers with 400 grams thinsulate....if you wear an 11 or more then go largest size

also, sewing mesh pouches over the toe inside to hold your hot hands super warmer is money....doubles how well the boot works.....gotta be mesh to let air in

I was a rubber boot guy for decades and it worked ok but they are heavy and plodding and again, you sweat up on the way in. But my system with them was pretty refined and worked good. I would always change out the insole to a thick wool cut to size insole from tractor supply. This puts insulation between your foot and the ground or cold stand or platform The last few years I’ve gone to wearing hikers in with merino wool socks and that works great but for super cold days and long late season vigils I’m trying the boot blankets I detailed earlier in this thread. Hot hands toe warmers work great too.
