Calling All Ameristep Users!

Ok, tried to dye the Delrin with black RIT dye. That didn’t work very well but at least the steps are no longer bright white. Added an OCM buckle with 5 steps that gets them tight enough for them to not move on the tree. These pack down very well.

How are they working for you. Finally got my piece of Delrin. What dimensions did you use?

Still waiting patiently for the machine shop to bring back my Golden buck Knock offs

Seriously! I'm about to pull my hair out! lol me and that Bieech patience don't see eye to eye!!!!!

They are working great. What I did was just trace the profile of an ameristep in Photoshop. Then I adjusted it to where the hole for the strap was 1/8” wide and 1.25” long. The dimensions come out to pretty close to 4 inches tall and 4 inches from the back to the tip of the step. This gives good room for my foot (size 10.5).

Has anyone considered making that strap hole big enough for a 2" strap? for people who can't get them tight with standard 1" and OCB, if you used a 2" strap and the transom saver OCB's they use to strap back of boats down, you'd break the step before you moved it on the tree...

Also - this is a great hack for people who use hangons that don't use a camming action to seat.

Be careful, you can generate some serious force and may bend weaker tubing...

Nice I drew a couple out on my scrap piece of Delrin. That's what I came up with as roughly 4 x4. I could get up to five cut out but would be using a saw to do it so they wouldn't be uniform. No matter how hard I tried. That and my piece is just under 1 inch thick.

As some one whose never used a ring of steps, what would be the ideal surface area of the step (width and length), and how many steps do you prefer to use?

Most strap on ROSs use 4-6 steps. The strap on variety are roughly 1" wide generally speaking. I have seen them as wide as 1.25, and as skinny as 0.5.

If you could have an ideal ROS, would 1.5" wide or even 2" be more comfortabe? What about the length, 5" or 6"?

I dont think wider is necessarily more comfortable. It is more bulky though, which kinda defeats the purpose to me. As far as length, I believe ameristeps are 3.5" long. 4 would be plenty. More is wasted space to me.

I sent him a text asking if i would see them this week he says "I don't thank so"
lol
dude does excellent work but is slow as heck and I'm not in his top ten of important stuff

Anyone ever thought about making the bottom of the base wider and angling back up to the top? Maybe one shape for the left side, and one for the right side? Somethin like this (this one would be for the right side of the tree):

Ok, got some stuff my machinist last night. He gave me few brackets that will screw onto the back of the BearClaws or API Folding Skyhooks. This will allow a strap to be used with these steps. I'll test them out and take some pics. He made two at 1" wide and two at 2" wide to possibly help with stability.

He also sent me some drawings of aluminum Ameristeps he's working on.

The blue pic would weigh 6.36 oz and the brown one 9.08 oz. He basically used the Ameristep design at 1" thick. Should I have him make some prototypes or are there some things you'd like to see changed? Should we switch to a less aggressive tooth design. Should it be 1.5" wide? Let me know your thoughts - he is getting some quotes for laser and/or waterjet cutting as well. The slot is the kicker for machining.

Hurry up Dan! We’re waiting on those pics! Lol
My machinist said he will try to work on them this weekend. try? He is going to be the death of me!

@DanO, assuming they're aluminum, I think smaller tread would be good. The ameristeps have that aggressive tread because they're plastic. Or that's what I would think.

A 1.5" wide step would be huge, but it would handle side pressure better. Personally, I'd rather have one narrower for better packability. A 2" strap slot would be a keep option though.

Also, getting back to the aluminum thing, I don't think the material under the step would be necessary. The API'S I have dont have a lot of bracing down there, and seem plenty strong.

@ImThere - Are you able to see pics?

These would be aluminum. I'll have him adjust and make sure it fits a 2" strap, reduce the tread, and loose some meat (bracing). What about the angle? Any grooves/spikes on the back for traction?

Maybe ?I didn’t see pictures to mount on the bearclaw folding steps?

I like this one the best. My suggestions would be to remove the hole and then move the slot down. I'd put it 2/3 up the step. I don't think the teeth need to be so aggressive but I also don't think it would really hurt. I would not go more than 1" wide on the step. You will really start to loose the packability of the steps. I would suggest for anyone who wants a wider step to take 2 and put them together to make a 2" step, @huck72412 has done something like this with ameristeps before.

I would also stick with a 1" slot. @Nutterbuster if you go to a larger slot that also means you have to go to a larger buckle. A 1" slot can work just fine.

Just for a little perspective on why I feel strongly about keeping the steps narrower (besides better packability). I learned to saddle hunting standing on screw in metal ameristeps. How thick are they? Maybe 3/8"? I also stand on the tree bolts all the time. So my needs in a strap on step aren't a wide step to stand on, they are a step that is easily packable for mobility but stable on the tree.
