I think hunters tend to over think buck bedding areas. I think it is more a matter of them finding a place where humans and other predators (we're not the only ones they worry about) seldom venture. Add in the correct elevation, cover, wind direction, visibilty on the down wind side, and you have a bedding area where they want to be.
I don't think there's a ton of logic involved, just pure prey instincts to avoid a threat. They find the places where we have trouble getting into quietly or getting into at all. If their noses and instincts sense that predator intrusion has increased to an unacceptable level, they respond accordingly and move to the next area that has the solitude they're looking for.
It's just what they do, what their DNA is built for. Avoiding predators, staying alive another day. It's how I survived high school when I was an 85 lb freshman.
