Climbing rope for tree access

Just thought I would share. I just got a foot ascender and I'm in love with it. In combo with a foot- loop and a distel hitch this is fast even when I'm screwing up.

Mind posting more details? Is the distal your primary life support point, with a foot ascender separate and a hand ascender connected to a foot loop and positioned above the distell?

Has anyone climbed with Samson Predator yet? Any feed issues? I only have a bridge worth of rope so it tough to tell

I figured I would add something that I'm utilizing in my SRT sets.

I have a number of trees that don't have a limb where I want to be. I also can't use a screw in so I'm using modification of the @bowhunter15 's bow holder to keep my paracord in position. As for the mod, I'm increasing the bolt length and adding a JB welded fender washer to the end to keep everything in place.

Something to consider when working with your favorite sets. It is my go to method when working with familiar sets this year. Just requires a short length of paracord (cheap).

I've used the predator for climbing. I haven't had any issues with it feeding and I really like the camo color. That said, I don't think it holds its shape as well as my other climbing line, New England Saluting Branches (Tachyon). It seems to flatten a little more and therefore is slightly less consistent/smooth on the rappel descent through the Grigri2. Still very usable though. Those are the only two ropes I've tried but I would say they are very comparable and I've had no issues with either.

Anyone else have experiences to share?

Bump because I have spent the last week reading this whole thread and it is fascinating!

Hopefully by this weekend I'll be able to show some ideas that the forum in general and this thread in particular has sparked!

I'm taking the jump as well now that I've filled one tag at least. Should have most of my equipment showing up next week and really looking forward to trying this out as I feel like it will potentially address a lot of my current access annoyances.

The best way to throw a throw bag is with two hands between your legs. I don't have one but when I used to climb trees professionally, that's how we did it. It takes a special knot to create two handles, but is super easy. Perhaps I can draw a picture in the morning. Once you have two handles, you swing the bag between your legs and then point with your hands at the branch you want during your throw/follow through.

You can pull the rope right threw the loop no knot needed to throw between your legs

I'm addicted to this topic. Just getting started with SRT. Love everything about it.

Hey guys! Been loving this thread. Working on an SRT setup!

What's everyone using for a belay/progress capture device? The Petzl Rig is out of my price range, I'm thinking about getting a grigri2... does anyone regret getting a grigri2? I ordered a megajul sport but the more I read, the less psyched I am on the tubular device

EDIT some spelling

I have a safeguard which seems pretty popular and well suited to our use. I am probably gonna start testing my system tomorrow.

For climbing you could use a ropeman or similar device in place of a Rig/Grigri/Safeguard in a RADS setup.

But then you’d need something for descending.

Safeguard looks good, having trouble finding availability in Canada though. I thought about the ropeman as well but descending is the definite downside.

Does the grigri2 capture progress like the safeguard? I'm seeing that the safeguard is for rescue/rigging work on the Mad Rock website, but I don't see anything for the grigri saying the same. What I like about the safeguard is that any weight on it will lock it up (because there's no spring in the cam), and I think that's what I'm looking for?

the lack of spring is the functional difference vs grigri or lifeguard.

To climb SRT you need two progress capture devices (ascender, rope man, grigri when rigged right). If you use two ascenders you still need a descender. Might as well use RADS which is pretty efficient for 20-30ft.
