climbing time

if you are climbing during daylight and during the rut, then there is an increased risk of a buck you'd shoot seeing you climb and then leaving and not coming back for a good while

if you are focused on climbing, there's a good chance you won't see the buck when this happens (and so not even know this occurred), as mature bucks are much less likely to blow and flag their tails...they just slink off

cutting your climb time in half, cuts the probability of that happening in half

Totally understand what you are saying, I climb 2TC and it generally don’t take me long to be up and ready to shoot. I guess my point in it all is why is everyone looking for that magic number of being from base of tree to hunting height in x amount of time. I usually go slow and do my best not to sweat, all the while trying to be as quiet as possible. I guess the biggest factor in this question is that of is one climbing in the morning or afternoon? I hunt more mornings that afternoons, but do tend to try to be quicker when hunting
afternoons.

I think everyone just wants confirmation that they're not significantly slower than other guys. Like, it feels as if I'm super slow but I'm consistently at 14-17 minutes from sticks off my pack to bow on the hanger with three sticks. I don't feel like I'm rushing and I'm not sweating. If everyone else was getting set up in 5 minutes I'd be freaking out.

I think that I a good point. That is what I would be curious about.

Actually when I'm in a new spot (which was alot this season due to having a family and doing night school last winter/spring).....I spend more time second guessing which tree to be in vs actually climbing. I wish I could pick one faster!

Scott Adkins 2 tethers up and back down in 3 1\2 minutes.i assumed 1 sticking was quick
I have not tried one stick climbing, but I have to try two tether. Going over to the two tether thread and ask some questions.

IMO that isn't very realistic ...let's see after walking 2 miles and with his hunting gear.
I can go in the yard and make a speed climb video if I wanted but that doesn't have anything to do with realistic hunting scenarios.

I agrea.however even if it takes three times as long to go slow.its eficiant lightweight and small to pack.and just as easy as sticking.if not easyer.i go slow and still set 10 single steps and ros in about 7 minutes.at a snails pace.not trying to be fast.i don't care about the climbing time just eficiancy of the system ,energy, sweat, and movements.im spoiled rotten climbing tree branches.im completely ready to shoot in 3 minutes going slow not to be safe just quiet.slowly approaching a tree I clip my bow to my fanny pack and hit the tree climbing.listening and watching.but for branches trees I use ameristeps.going to work on my own 2tether system when I get time.justfor long distance backpacking hunts.but possibly replace my steps to.i just don't like metal .or bulk

Imo the actual climb is quick....it's hooking up all the stuff that takes a while...once my first attachment point is on the tree it is no time up there, then hook up more junk

I don't 1.stick climb but I think 15-20 minutes start to finish is respectable climb time regardless of climbing method
You're right. I timed myself from first stick touching the tree to platform set on Friday AM. I'm at about 15-16' (my usual height) with three full length Hawks each with a one-step aider. It took me just under 8 min. Getting ready to climb and setting up once up the tree takes longer than I thought it did.

Unless there's a lot of branches.....then all that goes out the window...hahaha
A limbless straight tree I would guess 5-8 for me also

Branchless trees are more rare here.started a 2t system about 6 years ago.but didn't like the materials I used.combind that with the first trees.and practicality ended that.however I want to try again.just based on packability and weight.and some good spots are in hardwoods or tall timber where the branchess have fallen

I agree with above 15 to 20 minutes to 20 feet is good for any method. I use 4 sticks and a knaider. I normally can be all ready to hunt from the time I get to the tree to be up 20ft and hunt ready in 20 minutes. I can be much quicker but than a lot of quick movement and more noise.

Efficiency is key. An efficient climb usually means sweating less. I can efficiently one stick and sweat a bit but it takes me 20-30 minutes on tough trees. I had a very inefficient climb that resulted in calling I nice young 7 point underneath me while pulling my bow up. He heard me scraping my stick off/on/up the tree.
Efficient

a few years ago, i called in a 6 point like that.....funny enough...I can't usually call them in on purpose around here!

we've all been there, first climbs in an area, figuring out a setup, are tough....especially before dawn or at grey light when you really want up the tree

it's even tougher when you are being aware of ground scent

back when i didn't know any better, i would walk to where i thought a deer would be and then shine my light until i found bare trunk patch and a shooting lane with my light

a version of that is good in off season scouting, but i've had several mature bucks alert off my ground scent and just bolt immediately...zero shot chance

when you explain all these considerations to people that don't hunt, it starts sounding like chess to them

the hunters i know that just hunt over bait from a ground blind with a crossbow think i make it too hard!
