Coal miners

My father is retired from 35 yrs in the coal mines along with my grandfather and two uncle's.

As a consultant I used to do a lot of permit work for the coal industry. Now I work as a land manager for the stone quarry industry.

Just wondering if anyone had the same occupation as me. I’ve been in the mines now for 8 years. It’s possible it could be the last year to if Biden get elected.

My father-in-law grew up in Raleigh County WV until the railroad took him to Baltimore. His family land is surrounded by a coal mining company. I'm sorry to say that as a whole the coal industries was slowly dying before Biden. We still visit yearly for hunting trips and we just bought his retirement home there so he can be close to family. But you can see his sadness whenever we drive and he would point out to me all the abandon businesses that used to be open everywhere we go. I'm not sure how much longer coal is going to be around except for families home that still use it to keep warm during the winter.

And we'll all pay more for electricity. All the little people lose. The big wigs get richer. :(

I'm a coal miner. Btw not all coals for electricity. You also use it for making steel. That's the difference in "met" coal and "stem" coal. If we stop building vehicles, buildings, ships, military equipment etc. Then we dont need coal anymore. People not from here just see coal as a "bad" thing but it keeps alot of us West Virginians in a job. My dad,his dad and his dad all were coal miners. That's what we know.Hard to leave it.

Glad to see another coal miner! What do you do?

Cool. Alot of people have the wrong idea on coal. Not really knowing about it. Its kept food on the table for my whole family.(uncles, brothers, cousins) for years. There more to it then everyone thinks. Most think we are just "anti-green" so to speak but not really.

You are right. I will admit that I do not know alot about coal usage. I have respect for anyone who put in a hard day work and provide for their family. I dont personally know anything about coal, but I will try to learn more since you did mention some good points.

My father was a coal miner for over 30 years. He's retired now.

I think people have the impression that it's all environmental regulations that have hurt the coal industry. However, the price of natural gas has come down significantly over the past several years, making it much cheaper as a power production source and reducing the demand for coal.

What? Wait... People over react to things with out trying to understand more about something? Or draw conclusion from things they read on the internet? Or what some politiaian says? That is ABSURD! GOOD DAY SIR!

Good point and no stack emission cleanup is needed. Is the large supply of natural gas due to fracking?

I think few understand what devastation it causes when a mine closes. It takes a "village" to support them. Probable more loss to the community than to the mine itself.

That and new pipeline(s) bringing a lot more gas from out west.

Most of the communities sprung up around the mines in the area I'm from. So the mine was the reason the community existed in many cases.

It's an interesting cultural milieu and history. On the one hand "it was the best job we were ever going to have" as my father put it.

However, it's difficult and dangerous work. There's of course a long history of enmity between the miners and coal companies, which frequently became violent.
