For those that have handled them, is it possible to remove the metal bar on the d-ring side and then reinstall it? I don't want to order and be surprised.

The reason I ask is that I would like to put this on an existing loop of sewn webbing.

Cobra makes a buckle to do just that, but it is for the 1.75" webbing common for mil spec (shown here as an example). https://austrialpin.net/product/cobra-retrofit/

I would like to do this for a 1" buckle/webbing combo.

Based upon ease of manufacturer, I'm guessing one side of the Cobra d-ring buckle is a solid end and the other end slides through the buckle and probably attaches with a flat metal clip that might possibly be removed carefully and then reinstalled. Either that or maybe a press fit kind of rivet (harder to deal with). I haven't been able to find good resolution photos of both sides of the buckle online.

Are you dead set on cobra? I just bought a raptor buckle for a 1” webbing

I'd take a Raptor (or any other rated buckle), but to my knowledge they do not make anything that can do what I'd like: which is come apart so as to go on a pre-existing loop of webbing (like the Cobra retrofit I linked, you can see where the rod has a hex on once side and would slide out). With all the Raptors I know of, you have to sew or use the adjuster bars.

EDIT: I think I figured out that worst case scenario, I can cut out the existing rod in the D-ring buckle and then insert an appropriate size grade 8 bolt with a locking nut. This is not for direct life support, so I would be okay with this heavy mod.

No, it is locked in place.

Best Regards.
