Cooler Enhancement

So if an expirement works or not, you have to post the true results.. So I tried to enhance my cooler by drilling holes into the lid and filling them with great stuff foam. To increase insulation therefore make the ice last longer. The holes filled up nicely and I was sure it was going to work! I have a photo blog that I took but the photos are not uploading to this forum. Not sure how to resize. But anyways, I compared it side by side with ten bags of ice to an exact same model cooler. Well 6 hours later and the cooler that I didn’t try to mod, has about thirty percent more ice in it. I guess the great stuff foam does not have much of an insulating property. But I saw a guy on YouTube do it and he said his worked out and held ice longer. Anyways, just thought I’d share an interesting experiment I did on my off day. God bless

I concur with your findings. I was in a two week out of state hunt and I had a cheap igloo cooler. I shot a doe pretty earlier into the first week and thought insulating the top would work great. It didnt do anything but make a mess and make an ugly cooler even uglier. If you have an uninsulated cooler top, I have found that using reflectix foil back bubble wrap works better than trying to fill the lid with foam. You can find buy at Home Depot. If you're in the market for a cooler then I subscribe to the thought "buy once, cry once"

We e got the Walmart Feti (fake yeti) and it’s great. For a lot less than real yeti. And if it grows legs one day I’m out $115. Not $1150.

I bought a permachill from gander mountain a few years ago and it still works great. It's another wannabe yeti but it's held ice for days for me

I think the Reflectix is the way to go also. I also fill and freeze empty 1/2 gal milk jugs for ice packs. it helps keep things a lot cleaner.

This. It's kind of like the attic in your house. There's a reason we only roll/blow so much insulation above our ceilings.

I got a bobo walmart rotomold and in early season I'll usually get dry ice and 20pounds regular ice. That will last 5-6 days. When it's cooler weather ill substitute the dry ice with 3-4 2 liter bottles filled up with water and froze solid. Before the fancy cooler i had a coleman that i insulated with 2'' thick styrofoam mitered and cut to fit right tight on the inside. Ice might last 3 days with the Coleman. If i had the money to buy a name brand id go with engel. Original rotomold cooler and made in Florida
