Crossbow Conundrum

Nope. Don't relate. I used compound from 2012 to 2018. Bought a cheapie crossbow and was hooked. I'm not an archery hunter. I'm a hunter. The weapon I use makes no difference to me in the joy I get from harvesting an animal. I don't think people realize how brutally hard killing a big woods mature mtn buck is. No matter what you take him with, it's an immense challenge

Cons to the crossbow. A little more weight. Gotta worry about limbs left to right when shooting around a tree.
Pros. Strait, accurate, easy of use..
Cons to the compound. Takes a little more practice. Higher chance for error on shot. Some internet keyboard jockey who hunts 500+ Acer farm full of big bucks says your not a real hunter.
Pros. Little bit lighter. It fits it shoots eassier. Keep your internet man card!

Enjoy the hunt. How ever you do it. I actually just fired a few arrows on my compound before I go tomorrow morning. I'm going with it tomorrow at least. I have meat in the freezer. So no extra incentive to get on. Looking for a slam dunk at 25 and in..

...

I shoot a crossbow for many of the reasons mentioned above...I bought my first Excalibur in 2008 to hunt late season archery in the Special Regulations unit (Phila PA) and fell in love with it. To me it was the best of both worlds and I still think it is to this date...I do practice as much as I am able to, just cause I love shooting an arrow

Do what's right for you. But my plan is to enjoy all this new technology and when I'm in my 70s, I'll just pick up the latest speed bow and shoot it on 40 lbs.

If I had to make that choice today, I'd get a PSE Omen 40 to 50# model and shoot it at whatever poundage feels right and fine tune it and use an arrow around 400 to 500 grains and a fixed blade head.

A 40# Omen is probably as powerful as my 60# Darton Yukon that I bought in the late 90s.

It's weird to me that bow speeds have gone up but people are shooting the same or more weight. Which is fine if you were always underbowed or adequately bowed (like me with 60 pounds)....but you see guys with shoulder issues struggling to pull 70 lbs with a modern bow and it just doesn't make sense to me.

I hunt 90% of the time on the ground. Probably 80% of that time, I go with my recurve, because it's in very thick areas where a 15 yd shot is a stretch. The other 20 % of the time, I'm in an area with longer shooting lanes, more than 20 yds, and I'm just not comfortable using my recurve at 20 plus yard distances. So, in those areas, I use this, & I sleep just fine at night!

North of the border we just don't have the same hang-ups on crossbows. Lots of hunters use them, lots use vertical bows. People around here save their energy to debate which beer is best over what kind of bow to use.

If it is legal in your area, and it feels right to you, go for it.

Note to self: If you ever leave Dixie and head north, head all the way north.

Last year I started using a crossbow about 50% of the time and this season I am 100% crossbow. I love the fact that I don't have to worry about getting busted drawing my bow. I will take every advantage I can when it comes to harvesting deer. Funny thing is the only friend I have that gives me ****, hunts on an amazing managed farm with redneck blinds in great spots and trails raked clean with switchgrass giving him cover in and out of the blind. Every hunter can be judged by another hunter that does something harder. Hunters just need to support all legal hunting period. You do you, and own it.
