Deer Stand Names

There appears to be a them.
Nerve Damage - where buddy fell and hurt his shoulder
You’ll put your eye out - where I took a branch to eye walking in in the dark
Something’s Missing - where I left my rifle hanging from my pull/up rope one night
Owl Stand - an elevated blind that an owl got in and went everywhere so bad it smelled like a chicken coop
Gorby - buddy got thunked on the forehead with the shooting rest and it left a mark on him like Gorbachev
Perry’s Corners - because it was on the property line of my neighbor Perry.
10 Point - where friend shot a 10pt
Mouse House - old box blind full of mice

Gorby for the win.:sob:

We had a "killing tree" on my Grandparents farm in the old days. It was a wooden treehouse with a 2x4 railing and a bench seat big enough for two. The seat lifted up to store gear and food. There was a small shelf on the South end big enough for a stove, thermos, and tin plate. It was a Gigantic White Oak and I sure miss the hunts with relatives no longer with us.

There was a stand on the old club that we called "Mile High". I never discovered who owned it but he had no fear of heights or apparently concerns about falling. A friend of mine and I found it one day while scouting. It consisted of a 40 foot ladder stick home brewed from 2 sections of 1 inch gas pipe connected with a coupler. Steps made from same gas pipe were welded dirtdobber style about every two feet apart alternating all the way up. The creator had V standoffs made from Rebar welded to the back of the stick to keep it off the tree. This 40 foot ladder was attached to the tree with a hodgepodge of various ropes. Some seemed to be yellow nylon boat rope, others appeared to be bailing wire, and a couple looked to be old bow pull up ropes.

At the top of this dubious edifice was perched an equally sketchy homebrewed lock on stand. It was hard to see from the Earth (and I was not about to climb up to inspect it) but it appeared to be made of 1 inch channel iron and expanded metal tacked together with a welder. It was held on the tree with a chain. I guess he ran out of bailing wire.

The stand appeared to have been on the tree for at least 10 years from all the rust. The most disturbing thing though was the fresh pull up rope going from the ground to the perch. It was still in use.

We have had a few named spots/stands

The Cadillac-First enclosed shooting house on our farm, taken out by a dead ash tree this winter:cry:
The Condo- fully enclosed with insulation and big enough for multiple people plus a heater
The tripod
The portable- small box blind on wheels
Tim's Tower-roughly 25 ft homemade ladder stand
Jeff's Box blind
The gate stand
The Barn-literally built inside the corner of the barn
The powerline

I don't usually hunt with others, so I haven't had recent occasion to come up with place names. But my wife and I have nicknames for various parts of the property - the Back 40, the Front 40, the Meadow, the Ball Field, the Picnic Grounds, the Bluffs, etc. Each of these spaces is under an acre; we don't have as much acreage as these names would imply. Where I used to live, hunted a parcel of popular public land, and we'd refer to "the fireline", "the chain of meadows", "the ATV trail", "bug city", "Buck Hill", "the swamp", "the big pines", "the valley", etc.

My uncle would always name his treestands so you knew the spots ppl were going to hunt. He had some pretty creative names such as
-The grotto. A spot outside a doe bedding area.
-The intersection. Pretty self explanatory.
-Gordy's lookout. A great setup his dad Gordy liked to hunt. Shot my first deer out of it and first bow buck.
-Really bill. His name was Bill and the spot was a ways from the parking lot through some thick stuff.
I only have one ladder stand I've hung the last couple yeats and I call that spot the grassy knol.

I've got a few spots named. Can't disclose all of them because most are named after the creek you take to get to them, but I can tells ya about:

The Duck Pond

The Indian Mounds

The Coyote Hole

The Up-The-Hill Stand

The Ramp

The Creek Plot

And last but not least...The Grassy Knoll

Yes.. thats what hunting is for me the memories we have, and the new ones we will create. Not always about the success but the relationships along the way. Keep Kicking!!

Is that where you're suppose to shoot the Yote?

I wanna hunt death ridge. lol
It is a flat on a ridge where it is running down towards the main creek bottom through the property. There are shallow draws that come up on both sides of the flat and all of that intersects at an inside corner of a big pasture. Half a dozen big white oaks on the flat as well. On the right wind it is really good.
