Deer Weight Estimating Chart

Ah,

Your goal wasnt clear before.

I thought we were sharing ways to estimate live weight to a pretty precise degree.
No worries. I'm not even sold on that chart 100%, because I don't get those edible meat weights. And, I like to think I get most of it off. But, I debone everything and pack it out, so I'm not taking out bone-in hindquarters.

The buck I shot last week had a chest that measured 48". According to the chart its live weight should be 340# and a dressed weight of 272#. My bucks dressed weight was 225#, nearly 50# less than the chart. So I would say, just from my experience, the chart only gives a ball park estimate on a deer's weight.

There’s no way were getting close to those weights, especially in the field. I assume it just means “all red stuff”. Which isn’t possible to get off of the animal.

I also feel like if they just did the same measurement but with the skin off, it would tighten up margin of error considerably.

Did they publish the background ?

While not a deer, this shows where to measure heart girth for weight estimates.

Are you high or low, and where do you hunt?
I get lower weights than those numbers. I've gotten closer in Ag regions. I definitely see a difference in areas with less food resources. North to South is a difference, but may be more noticeable ag to no ag. I've killed deer from the Midwest to the Northeast to the gulf south. Even deer I've weighed in north Missouri are different body sizes than ones I've weighed in south Missouri.
