You mentioned Illinois. I thought it said packing out was not legal there. More power to you if you do it, I agree you should be able to. But can you confirm the legality if you know for certain?

I have called and spoke with three different CPOs from different counties here in central Illinois. One just kept repeating that the sex organs must remain attached. The other two were more helpful. Both told me that you can pack out an animal. In order to do so, you have to:
1. Call in your tag in the field.
2. Take hide off leaving sex organs attached to hide and hide still attached at base of skull
3. Take quarters, backstraps, tenderloins (or fishes as I recall reading somwhere on here) and any other meat off and pack in bags.
4. Drag head with attached hide/sex organs and attached neck/spine/ribs while packing the quarters/meat.
5. EVERYTHING except guts has to be removed from field.

They both said reason for having to leave sex organs attached to hide attached to head is because they have had problems with people keeping sex organs from different animals and using them on different deer to get by the two antlered deer limit.

Thanks for the response. That clears it up!

Although Michigan's UP doesn't have steep or rocky terrain this is how the locals haul deer...;)

I live in Illinois, but that's a huge no for me. I'm not dragging any unnecessary weight if I don't have to. Course I like to take the neck off as a roast and the rib meat off as grind..so that will go in my pack as well, and the spine...that's staying in the woods. The head yes...the hide will be attached but only a long 3" or so strip with the sex attached to it. I don't mount my deer heads with the hide on as I only do european mounts.

Versa cart with angled tires for timber, Otter sled for snow, and a Radisson canoe for water. Otter by far makes the best sled as it has thicker plastic.

90% of the deer I kill are taken out by myself because I normally hunt alone.
