Hi! just joined last night, but I’ve been looking into saddle hunting for about a year and a half now. I’m on a budget and trying to make my own saddle. Need help finding out exactly what materials I need to make a saddle (thread, seat, etc). If I can make one without using a rock climbing harness that would be great but if not then it’s not a deal breaker. Really just want something simple and relatively light weight but definitely safe and strong. Also if anyone from NW Ms is around or reading this then let’s do a little hunting!

How much are you thinking of spending? I used this last year and was very comfortable. I needed the sitdrag $35, three carabiners $10 each, a climbing sling $10, a GI sustainment pouch $7 and a tool belt $6.

Simplest and lightest would be a sit-drag. That is usually accompanied by a climbing harness because it's not meant to be a saddle.
Simplest, lightest, and maybe cheapest actual saddle would be a sling style. For design help look at the wraptor thread here, or the recon sling by treehopper.

Do you already have a rock climbing harness? I sewed this with a $6 sewing awl from Harbor Freight. The fabric is too stretchy but it provides more support than nothing. Adding layers or choosing a less stretchy fabric would work.

I don’t have anything at them moment. Trying to find out cost of all the materials and what not

I’m trying to spend 100, or less. If it’s not feasible then obviously I’d spend more ya know.

Another vote for a sit drag. I use a rock climbing harness for my lineman’s rope and in case I fall at the top but all of my resting weight is on a sit drag

This may just be the route I go

I sewed a saddle from a yellow truckers strap and have been battling a little hip pinch on the sides. With my sit drag I had a little hip pinch, I am not sure if more or less. I do remember some and it got less the more times I hunted. I was mostly up a tree for 6 to 8 hours. Rock climbing harness would be cheapest. You can attach your lineman's rope to the waist belt since it fully rated for human support. The belay loop is perfect to attach a tether. You need a way to climb. If sticks, you can stand on the top step and see how long you can stand it. Some people are fine with it. Maybe attach a piece of angle aluminum to the top step, even with wood screwed to it or not. I have a full body harness with this style bottom and it works fine.

Sit drag works great, just had a 4 hour sit in mine tonight. Got a primal step and made a plywood platform. I’m saddle hunting pretty cheap And don’t really know what a commercial unit has that my sitdrag/RCH setup doesn’t(at least that would justify that much more money).

I appreciate all the replies but for my first saddle I’m just gonna go with a trophy line. I figure I should learn on a commercial one before I go trying to make my own and mod things.

If money is an issue you could start with a rock climbing harness and a fleece saddle. My plan is to go that route and experiment until I have more informed opinions/preferences.

What is a fleece saddle

Quite a bit of discussion regarding fleece saddles on SH, a real wealth of knowledge.
