DIY spur pads?

I know that most folks mod their pads and straps for hunting, but has anyone tried making their own pads from scratch?
I'm considering buying a pair of bare climb right spurs, and making pads out of thin PVC material that I have around, padding them with pieces of an old foam mat. These would be more stiff than leather pads, but not as rigid as the aluminum ultra light ones that climb right makes.
If it worked out I would end up with a pair of light spurs, all modded out, for around 175.
Anyone tried something like this yet?

Very interested to see what you come up with. I started the very same mods on my Buckingham gaffs last weekend but got sidetracked. Hope to continue with it this week.

I'm excited about this idea, but I'm still considering using my XOP hand climber for climbing/platform, in which case I won't need the spurs. Trying to prioritize gear spending. We'll see.
