Do as I Say Not as I do

My other risk assessment issue is when I feel I am on a sorta sketchy climb I always feel better tethered (note the spelling skillz) into my bridge than when I'm on a lineman's belt. But I get lazy and sometimes my right, left or middle nut starts getting a little anxious because I've taken a fall on a lineman's belt and let me tell you...positioning aid is a generous euphemism for their nutbusting PPE capabilities. Fall restraint, not so much. I guess castrated is maybe better than dead? Yeah I am a definite poosay when it comes to heights but I am often more lazy than I am afraid.

Yep. I spent many, many hunts in my granddad's old baker with nary a safety device in sight. And I thought I was hot stuff, so I climbed until I hit the first limb in big, mature pines.

I'd puke now if i found myself in that situation
Your granddad's old Baker . . . now you're just trying to make me feel old. :anguished: I can remember when Baker treestands came out. They were about the only option. For the first 10 years of my bowhunting career I simply stood on a branch. Safety gear, why????

Get my bow tuned, then decide to tinker with it the night before a hunt.
Get my bow tuned, then decide to swap in new xyz item the day before a hunt.
Get my sitting spot all picked out, then second guess myself when I get to said spot. Oh wait, I still do that.
Not going to bed early enough the night before a hunt

This is soooooo true. I cant hardly sleep the night before opening day because I'm second guessing my location, my gear, my life.....

Hanging a stand and realizing I can't reach that 1 limb to finish a shooting a hole so jump out of stand onto another limb to work my way down it hand walking to.get.to the limb I need to to break it off. Then figuring out how to get down. Ive broke many of small trees over from.the tops bending them over riding them down to make the right shooting hole. Definitely not the smartest but I never said I was a either but never claimed to smart sooo

Dont go to saddlepalooza and say your going hunting in the morning...... @denots @catman529 @IHI6FAN will make that hard to accomplish.....maybe I contributed to the delinquency a little bit....I'll have a surprise for u guys next year....

My biggest thing is I rarely use a linemans belt enless it's a rather large tree. I'm working on it tho

i put pineapple on a pizza once.

nah, i used to use my climber without any sort of safety harness, then i watched a video of a guy fall all the way down the tree when his weight shifted and he broke both of his legs

I guilty of not getting on the tether before stepping on the platform....I have corrected and make it a priority now.....how stupid of me....that is the 1 time during the whole climbing process that is the most unsafe IMO

I'd say I've watched too many youtube videos and talked myself out of a plan due to wind/weather/whatnot. I should have just went out and hunted the "less than ideal" conditions and not worried about buggering up a spot.

I started out deer hunting in the 70's. I would go to the city dump and find discarded aluminum door frames. Then I would cut them up and make my climbing deer stands. They were not welded just get some stove-bolts and screw it together. "Safety Harness" what is that never heard of one.

Started climbing with a Baker when I was 7. No such thing as a safety harness for hunting back then but Mom did make us some sweet chest pads for climbing early season or when you needed to climb a hackberry. Switched to a lock on lem and screw in steps and normally used my left leg as the linemans when I got to stand height so I had both hands free to hang the stand. Almost everyone I hunt or used to hunt with has fallen. I have had a few real close calls.
