Do Thermo cells spook deer?

I have had several people tell me the earth scents spook deer more than the normal pads. Either way I play the wind. Use the thermocell all the time. Works great for hunting the swamp. Mosquitoes so thick they will push through the bubble but seem to not land and bite. If they smell your thermocell they can smell you. I have had more deer come downwind in the swamp and stop and catch the smell. With the thermocell I have had quite a few keep on going. So if anything it may help cover some of the scents. I have no idea if that is the case, but I sweat like crazy so no way I am able to fool a deers nose so I do not even try.

If you’re done out there go ahead and PM me those coordinates, I’ve got a Marine finishing out his career out there that just got settled in. He’ll be there 3 years.

I’ve been sending a Marine that’s just getting settled PM’s every few weeks. What are the chances.

Thermacell's are pretty much a necessity here early season. I've used them so much that I instantly associate the smell of them with bowhunting. I have rarely had any deer spook from what I would consider the Thermacell and it was probably my scent drifting along with the smoke that made them blow. I use the earth scent pads most of the time.

I've had swarms of mosquitos in a holding pattern ten feet in front of me all evening before and I could tell they were just praying the butane would run out
.
If they could talk thered be that one mosquito talking to the boys about your thermocell bout to run out braveheart-hold.gif

I've often wondered how we hunted early season here before we had thermacells.....who am I kidding?? even late season the skeeters can be horrible!!
I know how we did it. Stored our clothes in a duffel bag with an earth scent wafer and then when it was time to get in a tree, sprayed down head to toe with deep woods off and took the can to the tree so we could re-apply or check the wind as needed.

So how are you all keeping the Thermacell? I been sufficiently scared by you all to use a Thermacell tomorrow. I am running a chest rig only, is it safe to just keep it there or should I hang it on the tree via tether? I read that it is most efficient laying down but I cant see doing this in a saddle setup. Maybe tape paracords and hang it on the side but that seem like a lot of DIY.

I bought the thermocell holster. I carry it in my dump pouch and then hang the thermocell on my bow hanging strap once I’m at height

The holder sleeve is worth the extra money.....at least with the old style units. I don't have a new style so can't comment on that.....I hang it where needed. Gear/bow hanger strap on the upwind side of the trunk, molle on my saddle/vest.....but on my tether I use bungee strap tied into a prusik to cinch up around the quick link to keep it from dropping and the tail of that prusik is where I hang it majority of the time....sometimes u hang it in a totally different tree if it's in reach and upwind of u...the holder sleeve got the clip and also loops sewn in u can use a little biner or gear tie etc.....yeah they are supposed to be more effective laying horizontal but don't stress about that

Mine was on as I killed my buck this year. Play the wind

I’d be careful with it that close to your mouth, nose and eyes. I did that ground hunting during Turkey season and kept getting a mouthful of it and had to move it to my side. I also am a chest rig guy. I got the Genesis 3D clip and mounted mine to my pack. You can also get a cheap AR-15 duel magazine holder on Amazon and attach it wherever. They fit perfectly.

I’ve only run them on my pack. Prefer to keep them a few feet away.

If wind in my face, in my lap on seat of hybrid. If wind at my back, strapped on back of hybrid.

If in a hang on, on platform below seat.

So been in the tree for 3 hrs. Have not turn thermacell on and still no bug in sight. Im sweating from the heat. We'll see what happens around noon.
