Does thermacell actually do anything?

I

Ive been busted using both, and I've killed deer using both. If it's hot enough to need a thermacell, I generally believe scent control efforts are fruitless. You either pray for a consistent wind or accept that you're killing the deer who smell you and don't have sense enough to care.
I'm usually sweating up a storm early season.... Scent control is futile for me till october usually

Thermacell is well worth it. Essential for me in the early season.

I bear hunted in Saskatchewan on year and I arrived in camp with my Thermocell and the guide laughed initially but by the end of the week he bought several of them. Up there that was the worst mosquito situation I have ever been around. If you had to walk a mile they would bleed you to death(seemed like it anyways). The buzz of the mosquitoes was deafening and this is coming from a guy that lives on the edge of a cedar swamp. The short answer is they work and don't spook game.

In Quebec, a head net was absolutely essential in August away from the lake. I didn't have a Thermacell then. Mine seems to work here.

I don't use one anymore, because if you're moving or the wind is blowing it doesn't do jack. Also doesn't phase other bugs, unlike deet which will discourage flies and ticks as well as skeeters.

Does deet smell? Yep. Does a thermacell smell? Yep. That leaves 99% deet being more reliable, cheaper, and 1 piece instead of 3.

I disagree. If the wind is blowing hard enough for the thermacell not to work then the bugs won’t be as bad. With deet, they might not bite me but they will buzz all over my face. They stay away with the thermacell for the most part. Huge difference in hunting in a stand with a thermacell vs deet in my opinion.

I experienced the same thing on a fly in fishing trip to far northern Ontario. The mosquitoes were like something out of a horror movie. Absolutely horrendous but after firing up the Thermacell 10 minutes later it was like an invisible dome around us and they didn’t enter. That week proved to me just how well they work. I would never hunt early season without one. Just as important as my bow and arrows.

Amen to that! I had never experienced anything of that magnitude before and I see why moose get hit by cars trying to get away from them- just brutal!

It definitely works! A must have for me in eastern North Carolina. As others have said it doesn't work as good when walking so run 2 and walk slower

It works much better than you could ever believe it would. I’ve sat in a tree in September and watched mosquitos 12 feet away look like they’re running into glass.

I use a Thermacell and it works. If you don't want to use one and don't want the smell or greasy feeling from deet, then use Picaridin.

It works great for TX mosquitoes, I have heard from reputable sources that it does not work worth a crap in CO. Maybe different mosquitoes or an elevation thing?

Thermacell and Permethrin. Both work great together. Lots of places I would never try to hunt without them. Even use the thermacell in the yard, around the poo...etc

Thermacells from my experience work if your in one location. If you’re moving from spot to spot, they don’t have the chance to create the bubble around you.

Sawyers & cutter repellent cream is my scouting combination.

I can’t imagine hunting without one. Had a bug tamer suit back in the day and these Florida skeeters still wore me out.

As said, not good if moving fast, if I’m walking slow it still keeps them down to a bearable level. High winds keep the skeeters down when the thermocell isn’t working. But make sure you have it cranked back up about 10 minutes ahead of the evening wind slack cause they’ll be swarming you again and it takes a few minutes to get cooking properly.

I’ve never been busted that I’d attribute to the thermacell.

I own the lantern version I plan to use this year. I keep my clothes in a dry bag and get dressed at the truck and I also change before I leave at night....if I remember to turn it on I'll have the light and the smoke for at the truck and just use the handheld for up in the tree. Like @shwacker said....have it preheated before u get to the base of the tree and keeps them from buzzing your face while climbing

I forgot the appliance on the outside table last night and found it this morning with this sitting on the grill part
