Drone Deer Recovery

99.9% sure that's illegal in my state.

In my state, you can fly a drone over a wooded area, but not in order to scout for deer. It makes me wonder how they'd know your intent.

So, a nature photographer can do this, but not a hunter. Which only fuels my belief that we should all dress like nature photographers to get away with various crimes.

Odds are you aren’t paying for that unless you’ve really lost the trail, and I’m all for more recoveries… my concern would be do folks take lower odds shots knowing they can call the drone, seems like that would be the tiny minority but I dunno.

Your cellphone has a camera doesn’t it?

Yea i believe this guy is all over tiktok
I gotta say i kind of have to say im happy this is highly illegal in most states including the two I hunt.
I have no problem with dog recovery but this is getting ridiculous.
just my opinion though and we all have opinions like we all have az4h7l3s
Lol

Not legal here.....however not sure how they would enforce....they got little cop copters on patrol trying to catch the registration number on naughty drones? Unless u made a video to post on social media showing u operating on public land like a true knucklehead

100% illegal here on all public land. I'm in favor of it remaining illegal. There is just too much room for something like this to go from deer recovery to remote scouting using thermal and night vision. Folks are already getting too lazy watching their cell cameras from the office and running down the road to shoot a deer on their lunch break. Way too many people are in the mindset of throwing money and technology at hunting and not putting in the time and work to become better hunters. I understand this is about recovery, but it is a very steep, slippery slope.

This technology scares me for how it can be used unethically
Oh yeah. What's stopping someone from using drones to stalk their ex or even kids. There are a lot of sickos out there and Amazon delivers. Look at the uses drones are being put to in Ukraine. Drones are in the infant stages now and controlled by people but pretty soon you could have drones making the decisions when and who to kill based on simple algorithms. it's not far-fetched at all.

I think that for the purpose that Mike is using his drone, it's ethical. He's got a high end drone with heat imagining, IR and a couple of cameras and lights. He's providing a service and he's not cheap, $450 + $100 if he finds your deer.
He's not using his drone to locate trophy bucks for hunter for clients to go out and pursue. Could someone else? Well yes. I think that's why there are laws on the books in many or most states.
Myself, I don't think the service he provides is any different than someone hiring a dog tracker. The only gray area I see is if he would choose to guide a hunter in to a wounded deer to dispatch when the deer might very well recover and live to be hunted again.

The only thing keeping this from becoming commonly used for deer scouting is cost of the rig.

Once the price of all the high tech sensors and such goes down, just watch what begins. That's my prediction at least.

I fear you may be right but one thing that will limit drones to some extent is FAA rules about flying and airspace. Also, and it hasn't happened YET, but there will likely be some heinous misuse of them. They are so cheap already and the potential for misuse is so high it's only a matter of time.

The larger ones basically the helicopter version of cruise missiles. You can't but a cruise missile off Amazon but these are legal, for now.

Tech has hit fishing a lot harder and fast. I sometimes find it hard to believe a deer can make it thru a season with us using TECH and throw more in the game and it's gets harder to survive. Like it or not we have already bought into high TECH and will continue to.

The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was this guy saying it was the 3rd deer that he'd shot and not recovered.
Spend some damn time back at the house tuning your bow, arrows, broadheads and then educate yourself on deer anatomy and shot placement!!! I see this too often and the commercialization of bowhunting would have hunters believe that faster bows, lighter arrows and wider cutting diameter broadheads is the cure...NOT!

As for the drone recovery, I thought it was awesome, but I'm not sure of the legal aspect, in Ohio.

I mean who here doesn't use the phone for GPS?.....I think that's kinda cheating too
I use my phone to mark spots of interest, but I don't trust it to get around. A while back I was using it to navigate, and things just weren't adding up. Then I noticed that according to the phone the sun was setting in the east. I use a dedicated GPS unit but always have a compass with me.

But there is a big difference in using a GPS to get you around safely and using a drone with thermal and night vision to pinpoint a buck so you can ease in and ambush it.
