easier to use with quartered deer in hilly woodlands: jet sled or frame pack?

Deboned meat for me up and down steep terrain. Going from quartering to deboning doesn't take a whole lot more time. If you're going to throw the the bones out in processing I wouldn't pack them out. But, if you're going to use the bones, pack out only the bones you need. Leave the meat in as big of pieces that you can.

Depends on whether your deer is killed on top of a hill and all you have to do is go downhill. In that case the Otter sled (Jetsleds are very poor in construction compared to Otter) would be easier and faster. If you have to go up and down hills and there is a lot of deadfall trees, a sled is extremely difficult and packing out boned out meat on a pack is easier and faster. Strange that a cart was never mentioned as a good cart is easier than both other options in certain circumstances. Just like killing deer, the circumstances dictate how easy.

Also depends on the local regs. We dont have to bring the carcass out so I prefer to bring the meat out in the pack. Maybe my cart just sucks but that will tip over going over a garter snake on flat ground. Wife thinks I should get one of those kid carts to pull behind the bike. Still havent pulled the trigger on that cause it's just not that bad to wear a fully loaded pack on the bike.

What size sled do you use?

Back pack for me. Pack weighed 80lbs at the check station. I would rather make two trips with the pack than a cart or a sled.

I grew up in AK. Only times we ever used a sled was on tundra or flatter(ish) ground. I can’t imagine trying to drag a loaded sled up a hill. If you can quarter it and pack it so much better.

Bones help keep everything loaded vertically packing out. They only add a few lbs. that said, I still debone sometimes in the woods. Mostly to not have to do that step at home. Especially if the deer is left overnight and it’s really cold. Make a fire and be one with the woods.

I’ve never used a sled. But I can’t imagine sledding a whole deer on flat ground or hilly is easier than toting 30-100lbs on your back. This is coming from a person who has good boots and a properly fitted frame pack. It would suck without.

I can’t see a sled making sense anywhere but snow. Pack that chit out brah!

Roger. I'm sure you know your area well enough to execute good judgement. Public forum members don't have that context.

360 Orange is an area I need to improve. I've rarely had orange on my pack, private or public.

But I've had "wanderers" end up on private I hunt, and I know of some accidents on private in my region that defy logic (mine anyway). I've heard enough to open my eyes to taking more precautions going forward.

thanks for the reminder to put at least some large orange flagging on my pack

now, i wear a blaze orange hat and vest, with the hopes that my head above the pack is enough, but a piece of blaze orange fabric over my platform or something is a good idea
