Educate the ignorant, please!

I really have little compound but 50 years trad and have helped a good number come over. The 3 piece just has more mass and is easier to control your front hand. However you can learn anything. Big Jim will tell you develop good form in the beginning and it’s a lot easier from then on..
Thank you, I really appreciate your take on this. 50 years shoots traditional is amazing, wish I would have meet you 34 years ago when I was 20 and just getting started. But hey, got to start somewhere. It is funny how one minute you are a happy, confident and proficient hunter, with a compound and then you (me) go off the deep end with traditional and can barely hit the side of a barn, while inside it. Go figure.

It can come quicker than you think. Back when I first started 13 yards was my max and I killed deer. Though I can shoot well neat 30+ , I still take most deer at 15 or less..Good luck

Well thanks for everyone's advice, suggestions and patience.
Went to Big Jim's today and the bow is officially ordered!!!

I chose the one piece Buffalo that I wanted . Big Jim is going to use some Black Walnut from my father In law that he has had for over 20 years stored in his barn for the riser. Big Jim suggested the spalted maple veneers as a good combination with Moose accents. After shooting a few bows, I decided on a 60", 46lbs @ 28 inches.
Thanks for all the help!!!!

I missed this thread dang it. I got on the waiting list for a Thunderchild back in November so I’ve been agonizing over these decisions for 9 months now. Sounds like I should have just won one… FWIW, Maple and walnut are pretty much where I’ve ended up too.

I believe Thunderchild is his number 1 selling bow. It looks real sweet and is supposed to be a great shooter. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock when I went to his shop. I wanted to shoot all his different models but his bows don't stay around long. Congratulations as you are getting close to getting the call. Definitely post pictures once you get it.

...And so, your "Traditional journey" begins... GOOD FOR YOU!!!
Remember this, though...just like a shotgun that is custom fit to the shooter, a custom bow, made by a first-class Bowyer (like Big Jim) is made to fit... so, when things aren't going well with your shooting, (and that WILL happen from time to time-it happens to ALL of us!) just like the shotgunners say, "it ain't the gun, it's the gunner!!!"

Thank you. As odd as it sounds, I am ready for that feeling of knowing it is me and not the bow. I have temporarily set the Sage recurve aside just to get back in my compound grove for the season but I do miss shooting the recurve with all of its frustrations.
I can't wait to get that call from Big Jim, saying she is ready! I wish you a great safe and productive season.

Well, I got the call the other day that my Big Jim bow was ready and if I wanted it shipped?
I didn't want anyone at a shipping Company to touch my bow. The next day after a quick morning hunt I started the 4 hour drive to meet and hold my baby!
Big Jim and his staff are such professionals and took time on this bow to integrate the black walnut that my father n law has been storing in his barn over 20 years, for a special project. Well it made a beautiful riser to go with the spalted maple limbs and black sheep accents... pretty sure it is black sheep as everything is a blur.
I haven't been able to shoot it as I am still camping and hunting, yes compound bow. The worst thing is I am thinking of her, kinda sick sounding, isn't it.
Oh yeah... 46# @28" and 60" long.
This is the bow I had imagined but couldn't describe with words. So excited!!!!

Hopefully l, this goes through as I have very limited signal.

Thanks for everyone's input!!!

I’ve always liked Black Walnut and have envisioned a bow for years looking similar to yours. That is a sweet looking bow! Congrats!

Very nice bow! You did a fine job choosing the wood and bow combinations!! Congratulations, and keep us informed on your journey!!!! Have a blessed day!!!
