I have used bolts in white pine and the holes do tend to open up a bit and the sap is a sticky mess....some have commented that they have but the drawbacks are the soft wood can lead to sloppy holes. Perhaps drilling at a steeper angle will help the longevity of the holes. The other issue is Sap. Makes a mess of your gear.
