Favorite hunting knife

I have one of those that I rarely carry anymore due to its weight, but I've never had a knife that takes an edge like the Vanguard; it gets so sharp it's actually scary.
I've never used a Vanguard, but the Mora knives are stupid easy to get wicked sharp too! I have a few of them, leave them in my vehicles, etc. They're all of like $13 at Sierra. Soak it in heated white vinegar to treat the blade when you get it, put a thin coat of oil on it every once in a while and you're golden.

I got this yesterday. It is a Puma "White Hunter". It was in my late father in law's hunting gear, all of which was left to me. He was more of a duck hunter than deer hunter, but he did deer hunt some. Unfortunately, he had stopped hunting by the time my wife and I met. He passed away last year, and we are slowly going through things.

I did some research on it, and it turns out that this design was developed in the mid 1950's as a collaboration between members of the East African Professional Hunter's Association. Basically, a group of PH's (professional hunters) in Kenya got together and came up with this design, which they felt was the best general purpose African bush knife and worked with Puma, in Solingen Germany to produce the knife. From my research it took on quite a following in the 60's, 70's and 80's and some of these were apparently popular for soldiers to carry during the Vietnam War. Its size is probably better suited to use on larger African animals than whitetail deer, but I may use it to break down the next deer I get to see how it does. Generally, for deer I prefer a blade of about 3 inches or a little shorter.

My go-to the last few years has been my Wyoming knife and Buck Omni hunter. I use the gutless method. Wyoming knife to go around the legs and split the skin from the inside. Buck for the actual skinning. I also use a Havalon, but find myself reaching for the Buck more often than not.

I am on my second Buck 284 Bantam. the first one self-destructed on me. great cheap knife to use in the woods in case I lose it. I keep my good knives at home.

How are you liking that Serac? I’ve been looking at that one

Obviously I haven't tortured it yet; but absolutely loving the profile, the steel, the simplicity, and the weight. I'm considering the Carbon although the profile is different...
